On August 26, Rockstar Games addressed the recent leaks in a statement posted across official social media channels.
The studio said, "It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time."
Rockstar also apologized for the time it has taken them to finish the game and claimed that they are "nearly there," suggesting there won't be any further delays.

The statement follows a series of DMCA takedowns that continue to be issued and applied to the videos, all but confirming their authenticity.
The gameplay leaks in question appear to be from a 2023 build of the game and showcase various new features and mechanics, as well as cutscenes, stores, combat, and areas of the map.
The alleged leaker, who goes by the name of Cyberleek, stated that their actions are in response to physical copies of GTA 6 shipping without a disc and have since threatened to release more leaks:
“Preorders were not created for gamers. They were created because physical discs had manufacturing limits. In digital distribution, there is no inventory. There is no stock shortage. A digital copy cannot sell out. Yet publishers kept the preorder system and stripped away its only consumer benefit. Now gamers pay early and receive nothing in return except a countdown timer and a cosmetic skin. If publishers want revenue before launch, they can press discs. Print boxes. Put them on shelves. Earn that money through physical production.”
Following the major September 2022 GTA 6 leak, which saw over an hour of development footage published online, Rockstar Games issued an official statement expressing extreme disappointment over the security breach and assured fans that development would continue without long-term delays.
