GTA 6 looks great, but there's a chance it will be a massive disappointment.

  • Key Update: An editorial opinion piece analyzes potential warning signs that GTA 6 may face heavy overhype and optimization challenges upon its November 2026 release.
  • Status: Confirmed

  • Quick Answer: While GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, concerns remain regarding paywalled in-game features, a 30 FPS console lock, and delayed PC optimization.

For more than 12 years, people have been waiting for the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series. Everyone's patience is about to be rewarded, as GTA 6 will finally be playable on November 19, 2026. Now, assuming there are no further delays, that day will become a monumental event for gamers around the globe.

No longer will people have to settle for replaying GTA 4, 5, San Andreas, etc., as they'll finally get an entry that's expected to surpass all of its predecessors. I will admit it is exciting knowing it's almost here, but I'll also say there's a very high chance the game may not live up to all the expectations.

Looking at how things have been going, GTA 6 seems to be heading in a direction similar to Cyberpunk 2077. What I mean is that it's set to be one of the most overhyped releases in video game history. That's not a guarantee, but some signs point out that it might not deliver the amazing experience people have been waiting for.

One example is how it seems to lock important content behind a paywall. The game will have a standard and ultimate edition upon release. The former has what you expect, just the game that you can play and enjoy until you've had your fill. The latter, however, has some goodies that have raised some serious concerns among fans.

If you were to purchase GTA 6's ultimate edition, then you'll be treated to some exclusives. Obvious ones are weapons and vehicles, and while it's not exactly nice that standard edition players won't be able to enjoy them, it doesn't seem too bad, as the game will have more than enough alternatives to make up for it. What really made people scratch their heads were the exclusive locations and shops.

If you didn't get the ultimate edition, then you won't be able to enter a specific vehicle customization shop, weapons store, tattoo parlor, salon, and even a weapons mart. This can be seen as a serious issue, because what if those exclusive places and services have content that makes the game substantially easier, or more appealing to the player?

The other concern is that if GTA 6 is already locking out things that should already be part of the base game, then what's stopping Rockstar Games from putting other things behind a paywall? There might be other pieces of exclusive content we might have to pay extra for, regardless of whether you're a standard or ultimate edition player.

Another sign that GTA 6 could be incredibly overhyped is the 30 FPS console limit and the fact that PC won't be getting it by at least a year. In the case of the frame limit, it doesn't make much sense today, especially considering how far technology has come. I know the game will be loading a lot of assets, which could have led to the FPS lock, but you'd think Rockstar Games would have found a way around it with what the company has to work with now.

And with the delay to PC, the decision to make people wait for nearly a year is also rather concerning. Again, GTA 6 has been under development for more than 12 years, which should have been more than enough time to ensure that Rockstar Games releases a PC port simultaneously with the console versions.

Apparently, that isn't the case, which makes you question what the state of the game will be like upon release. If it's locked behind a 30 FPS cap and you still can't play it on PC even after waiting for so long, there will likely be some optimization issues that have yet to be resolved or never will be, which is not something that should be expected for a game that has a huge budget and a development time that most others can't afford.

The final sign that led me to believe that the release of GTA 6 will follow a similar path to Cyberpunk 2077's is the extensive gameplay trailer. The video showcases what you can expect from the game and really tries to drive home what you should look forward to, but that's the problem. By shoving out as much as they can over one trailer, it feels like a desperation tactic.

Yes, it looks pretty and fun, but all of that might just be a mask to hide how little there actually is when it comes to the gameplay and story. Hopefully, I'm wrong about this, but if a trailer tries really hard to show way too much, it usually ends with a final product that's more disappointing than anything.

GTA 6 looks to be heading towards the road of an overhyped game, but again, I'm hoping to be proven wrong. Fans have been waiting so long, and Rockstar Games owes them by delivering something worth the years of patience and support.
