And just like that, Monster Hunter Wilds, Capcom’s premier AAA action RPG, has been dethroned by another Game of the Year contender.
Split Fiction, the co-op adventure game from Hazelight Studios, has just received its review scores, boasting a staggering 91 on Metacritic—edging out Monster Hunter Wilds by a single point. Its OpenCritic rating of 90 is also creeping past Wilds’ 90, with a few more reviews from reputable critics still to come as the game officially launches tomorrow, March 7.
Already hailed as a strong Game of the Year contender, Split Fiction joins the ranks of highly acclaimed big-budget titles like Warhorse Studios’ Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, solidifying what is shaping up to be an incredible year for gaming. Meanwhile, there is still speculation and ongoing rumors about the potential release of Grand Theft Auto VI this year. If Rockstar sticks to its targeted release date, 2025 could go down as one of gaming’s greatest years.
This is no small feat for Hazelight Studios, which faces high expectations following the massive success of It Takes Two, the 2021 Game of the Year winner at The Game Awards.
According to most reviewers, Split Fiction is a vibrant and compelling co-op adventure that thrives on teamwork and cooperation. To further support players, Hazelight Studios has even created a dedicated Discord server for those in need of a co-op partner. Thanks to its innovative Friend’s Pass system, only one player needs to purchase the game, allowing them to share access with a friend who doesn’t own it—making crossplay possible across all consoles.
From the prison-break drama of A Way Out to the marriage-and-divorce journey of It Takes Two, this early success marks another milestone for Josef Fares and Hazelight Studios. Their expertise in the cooperative adventure genre continues to shine, delivering engaging stories that cleverly utilize split-screen gameplay.
