Rockstar’s Decision to Scrap Grocery Shopping in GTA 6 Breaks My Heart

Pushing a grocery cart through Vice City sounds mundane, but it’s the exact immersion GTA 6 needs.

  • Quick Answer: Rockstar North scrapped a planned grocery shopping and fridge-restocking system in GTA 6 to prevent the game's life-simulation mechanics from feeling overcomplicated or tedious.

It has been revealed that Rockstar scrapped a shopping mechanic in GTA 6 - and I'm heartbroken.

The ability for Jason and Lucia to go grocery shopping was initially included in GTA 6; however, it was ultimately removed from the game because the mechanics were too "complicated," and Rockstar wanted to balance both realism and ease of play.

You would have been able to restock your fridge, replenishing it whenever supplies were running low, but unfortunately, this will no longer be the case, and honestly? I think they should have kept it in the game.

Rockstar, It's Not Too Late to Restore Grocery Shopping in GTA 6

When I heard that Rockstar was removing a grocery and fridge-restocking mechanic from GTA 6, I felt my heart break a little. While I'm aware that the beauty of Grand Theft Auto lies in the story, exploration, and high-speed chases, it is sometimes the smaller details that make the world feel alive. Having Jason and Lucia do the groceries would've only added to that immersion.

In an interview with Famitsu, Rockstar North co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson said, "At one point during development, we were experimenting with a system that would allow you to buy groceries to restock the fridge. We had specifications for stores with groceries that you could buy and take home, and the fridge could be replenished. However, because this would have complicated the mechanics, we had to simplify it."

While I understand the studio not wanting to overcomplicate matters, I think it would have made sense to keep the grocery mechanic, especially as it directly plays into another feature in GTA 6. Food has a direct (and often visible) effect on Jason and Lucia. If they work out, they appear more toned. If they laze around and pig out, their bodies will change.

Since diet has such a deep role in GTA 6, being able to actively manage what goes into their weekly groceries amplifies it. Deciding whether to stock up on vegetables or chips adds another layer of intention to how you play, and it is far more immersive than just popping into a place and picking something from a menu prompt.

Rockstar opted to remove it for the sake of ease of play, and I get that, but I believe convenience shouldn't take a backseat to immersion. Removing the grocery mechanic to make things faster robs players of that satisfying realism that, granted, GTA 6 will have in other aspects.

It's a tiny detail to be upset about, I know, but letting us push a cart through a grocery store in Vice City would have made the world feel just that tiny bit more real.

Don't mind me, I'll get over it... eventually!
