Nintendo turned the nostalgia dial up to 9000 with its Switch 2 commercial featuring MCU actor Paul Rudd. Seeing Rudd wear the same clothes from the old SNES commercial will give fans of that era flashbacks and make them feel old. Most importantly, this proves that the GameChat cameras having a poor frame rate doesn’t really hinder anyone’s enjoyment.
Because this was a multiplayer-centric commercial for Nintendo’s new system, we saw Rudd and his friends play the upcoming Mario Kart World. While the game does have plenty of good single-player content, many see it primarily as a multiplayer racer, so this worked. It also helped show off previously announced features like rail grinding and the aforementioned GameChat.
As some Switch 2 previews have shown, the camera for GameChat is a far cry from what PC gamers and various streamers use when having multiplayer sessions. But it also shows that the bad frame rate doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Players are still focused on their screen, and GameChat is mostly there for smack talk, which we can all appreciate.
There’s always a chance that the camera gets fixed via future updates, and that is going to be appreciated by gamers. It’s still cool having a built-in Discord server on the console itself, even if fans need an NSO subscription to enjoy the feature. We can’t wait to see what other multiplayer titles will look like on GameChat, especially more competitive titles like Super Smash Bros.
Fans will be able to pick up a Switch 2 on June 5, with pre-orders for the system starting on April 24. Luckily, North America won’t have to pay extra for the console, but tariffs are making accessories like extra Joy-Cons more expensive.
