Chapter 4 of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black doesn’t pull any punches. Ryu Hayabusa’s stuck in an underground chaos zone with enemies coming at him from all sides.
This chapter has everything from navigating dark tunnels swarming with fiends to intense boss battles that will test your combat skills.
This article will break down Chapter 4 and give tips for handling the mayhem, ensuring you can successfully navigate each battle.
How To Complete Chapter 4
The chapter picks up right after Ryu's fight against Death Megalo Flyer in Chapter 3.
He starts in a pitch-black subway tunnel, still deep underground. Before you get settled, airborne foes are already shooting fireballs at you.
The Fiend's Bane Bow is your best shot at cutting them down fast before they have a chance to overrun you.
Once they're out of the way, head to the right side of the tunnel to find the first Muramasa Statue Store.
If you have enough essence, consider upgrading your weapons immediately.
The more you push through the tunnel, the more flying fiends appear.
Stay sharp before heading to the end, or the Black Spider Ninjas will catch you off guard.
These enemies are fast and relentless, so your best bet is to stay on the move and avoid their attacks.
After taking them down, you'll see a heap of wrecked train cars blocking the way. Head over and drop down the hole to reach the next area.
Another ambush kicks off as soon as you reach the lower area. More ninjas will swarm in, and you're in a tight fight just like that.
Throw out your best combos and watch for their explosive attacks. You'll also find a chest here with The Art of the Wind Blades, a strong Ninpo that's great for wiping out groups of enemies.
Take it before moving on. Once you're past the chest, take down another batch of enemies, then head toward the red glow in the distance.
Before heading that way, take a quick look behind the wreckage pile—there's a chest with Red Ki Orbs to refill your Ki for Ninpo.
Once ready, head towards the red light, which marks your entrance into a subway station filled with larger fiend enemies.
After dealing with the fiends, head left and take the stairs to Save Point 1. Use this to secure your progress before continuing.
There's a whole room of enemies waiting inside the train station. You'll be facing waves of ninjas, so be ready for a tough fight.
Once you've cleared them out, check the area for two chests: one contains a Herb of Spiritual Life, and the other holds a Red Ki Orb.
Be careful, as opening one will trigger a surprise ninja ambush. Go up the stairs, break through the gate in your way, and prepare for another fight.
Once you're done here, you'll step out onto the streets of New York City. Blade Dogs will be all over you as soon as you go out.
These quick enemies can be tough, so stay on the move and strike them before they close in.
When you're safe, just have a look around. A hidden path by the railing takes you straight into an alley with more ninjas.
Knock them out and keep heading through the alley until you find Save Point 2 beside a ladder.
Look up at the ledge above the alley before you move ahead.
Head over there to find Crystal Skull 1, which you can grab by wall-running the corner. Make sure to collect it before heading to Save Point 2.
Once you save, make your way up the ladder next to you. Just before you hit the top, backflip off the ladder onto a secret path behind you.
This will take you to a chest filled with Yellow Essence, a valuable resource.
Once you have it, climb the ladder and gear up for the next fight. Up ahead, you'll find a dead body on the road with a Jewel of the Demon Seal.
Keep moving, but watch out for another wave of big fiend enemies and flying ones. Pay attention to the fence on your right.
When you hit a broken section, jump across to grab Crystal Skull.
Don't forget to check the far end of the road for a Grains of Spiritual Life chest before using the ladder.
Now, drop down to the lower level. This opens up the Muramasa Store and gives you a Life of the Gods chest.
Now that you have these, you're ready for the next section.
As you roll up to the Brooklyn Bridge, a cutscene plays, and you'll be up against Godamus, a towering brute with insane strength.
Godamus likes to throw down some heavy hits, like the Fist Slam, where he lifts one arm and smashes it into the ground, or the Palm Slam, where he brings both hands down if you're too close.
He also pulls off an Arm Sweep, a sweeping move hitting a wide range, so jumping is the way to avoid it.
His Sonic Wave ability also sends out a concussive blast, knocking Ryu backward, while his Rock Projectile attack involves throwing massive boulders that can break your guard if blocked.
The best way to handle Godamus is to stay mobile and wait for openings after dodging his heavy swings.
Avoid sticking around too long; his melee strikes deal devastating damage, especially on higher difficulties.
Ninpo attacks do the trick here, so if you've got Devil's Way Mushrooms, use them to get your Ki back and fire off some strong spells.
Using heavy weapon combos, such as with Enma's Fang, can throw him off balance, letting you land several follow-up strikes.
It's tempting to go all in, but dodge first, then counterattack when he's open.
After you wear him down and land the final blow, Sonia shows up in a chopper to fly Ryu to Liberty Island for the next part of Chapter 4.
Large fiends will attack on the front lawn as soon as you land. These enemies are no joke, so quick dodges and counters are key.
Once you have cleared them out, enter the museum. Inside a glass case, you will find Save Point 4.
Break the glass to grab it, then lock in your progress before moving on.
Inside the museum, you'll stumble upon Enma's Fang, a massive greatsword considered one of the game's mightiest weapons.
It's visible in the display case, so you can't miss it. Not far from here, you'll spot a Devil's Way Mushroom on a lifeless body, which can be handy for regaining Ki before your next fight.
You'll run into a bunch of ninjas and bigger fiends ahead, so keeping on the move and using crowd control will help save your health and resources.
Give the area a once-over before you hit the elevator shaft. You'll find Crystal Skull 3 right under the catwalk, but you'll need a well-timed jump to retrieve it.
Once you've got what you need, ride up the elevator shaft to keep climbing. Higher floors mean more enemies, like archers and extra ninjas.
Just take it easy and watch your health. The path ends at a Muramasa Store, giving you one last chance to upgrade or stock up before the final boss.
The final challenge in Chapter 4 pits you against Alexei, a Greater Fiend who's extremely fast and packs a punch with his electric attacks.
Unlike the last boss, Alexei isn't as forgiving regarding mistakes.
His moves include fast-moving electric orbs that track Ryu, and you'll need to dodge fast to avoid them.
He also has a whirlwind spin, a powerful area-of-effect attack that can knock Ryu back if caught in it.
Alexei can also release an electric pulse, sending a shockwave that punishes players who linger too close.
You'll need to stay patient and play defensively to take down Alexei. Blocking is a safe bet since his melee moves are everywhere.
However, dodging toward him instead of away is often a better option. This prevents getting trapped against the arena's edges.
Enma's Fang is an excellent weapon for this fight, as its heavy strikes can stagger him and create opportunities for follow-up attacks.
If you time those counters right, you can destroy his health and keep Ryu safe.
Ninpo can throw out some damage when things get rough and give you a quick invincibility breather.
Use your Talisman of Rebirth now, as you'll find another one in the next chapter. Defeating Alexei marks the end of Chapter 4.
By now, you should have a lot of essence, upgraded weapons, and extra resources for Chapter 5.
