The Nintendo Switch has received a huge update, adding features that will get fans ready for its successor this June. From introducing that odd Virtual Game Card system that Nintendo made a big deal out of in a Direct, to GameShare and System Transfer, this is huge for current Switch owners.

Nintendo released details on this Switch update on its website, showing what major changes are now available on your soon-to-be last-gen hybrid console. It’s an interesting preview of what’s coming in the Switch 2, so plenty of multiplayer options and odd online restrictions. Some of these features are pretty groundbreaking, while others will be more fleshed out on the new console.

Virtual Game Cards are still an oddity that fans have legitimate complaints about, but being able to share online games with NSO Family members is pretty cool. Adding a time limit to that is odd, but Nintendo has always been like this, and they probably won’t fix this issue until the third Switch comes out.

System Transfer is interesting, since it brings over all of your users, games, and data to the Switch 2. In return, your current Switch will return to factory settings, which is a mixed bag. Nintendo recommends fans not to do this until they have a Switch 2, so those sticking to their V2s and OLED models should wait it out longer.

GameShare is limited to local wireless, and the Switch 2 has to initiate this feature before regular Switch owners can use it. This isn’t the worst, but definitely “little brothers” anyone who has the original hybrid system.

Fans should enjoy their Switch while they can. This update does a good job of getting people ready, while making sure they enjoy this system while it has some life left.
