Once you pick a potential match, you need to send them out on a date and ensure they don't fumble the evening.

It's such a refreshing change from being the damsel in distress. Instead of stressing over picking the right option, I enjoyed being the chaotic matchmaker who determined whether my client would end the night lonely or in love. Before Kitty Powers' Matchmaker, I never even considered that dating sims could stray away from the traditional treatment I'm used to.

The best part of Kitty Powers' Matchmaker is the dates. After all, selecting a match from a catalog is easy - it's proving yourself during the date that matters. On the date, you need to pick a restaurant that matches their taste by selecting from an envelope. You get a hint of what's under the envelope at the start, but once it gets shuffled, it's up to you (and luck) to pick the right one. You can cheat by using coins, which is what I would do once my clients started getting a little fancy. There was no way my VIP client was going to the cheap diner.

Once on the date, you're put through a bunch of tests. You have to pick food that matches your date's diet, navigate awkward conversations by picking what they like, and even try to get away with lying. I must admit, it does get hard. Sometimes the date says something my client hates, and I have to choose if we'll be honest or lie. And guess what? I choose to lie every time. And if I get caught in the lie, I'll spend in-game money to try and lie AGAIN. Anything to secure that date, am I right?

There's something so satisfying about pairing up a perfect match. After the date, they'll walk to the cab and either declare their love, reject their date, or ask for a second date. If they become a couple, you'll end up getting mail sometime later to give you an update on their lives. If they're a perfect match, they'll update that they got married, moved in together, or even had a kid. I can't help but feel immensely proud to know, yes, I did that. They aren't real, but it makes me think I'd be an excellent matchmaker.

There's also a joy in the matches not working out. It's awkward and cringey to watch, but seeing a disastrous date over something as minute as the wrong food being picked or my client's ex approaching mid-date is hilarious. These happen in real-life, but it feels outrageous to witness on the screen. There's also the chance of going on a second date if the first one wasn't a home run, and it feels like redemption - a chance to prove this job is for me.

I'll always be a fan of traditional dating sims and their deeply romantic routes, but Kitty Powers’ Matchmaker was the refreshing palate cleanser I didn't know I needed. This game made me realize that sometimes, it's more fun to play cupid than be the lover girl.
