If you don't know the premise of Mystic Messenger, let me lay it down for you. You play as a female character (you can name her whatever you want) who downloads a mysterious app that leads her into an apartment owned by a woman named Rika, who was once the founder of Rika's Fundraising Association (RDA) and is believed to be dead.
The app you downloaded? It's actually a chatroom for the RFA members. With you in Rika's apartment, the association decides to revive the organization and host a charity party. Over 11 real-time days, you must plan the party by inviting proper organizations, interact with the members, and uncover the truth regarding a mysterious cult.
If you notice, I said real-time days. The beauty of Mystic Messenger was that they utilize chat rooms to open at real-world times. This includes the ungodly hours of 1:00 AM, 3:00 AM, and 5:00 AM. If you missed the chat room, it means you lost the chance to build affection with whoever was online at the time. That is, of course, unless you paid to unlock it.

I was 16 years old and in high school when this game came out. I barely had any money to my name. So what did I do? I set alarms so that I wouldn't miss my chance. After all, how could I get the good ending with Zen if I missed it? What if Jaehee had something important to say about the parties? Missing these chat rooms was unacceptable - it would break my heart.
When I replayed the game as an adult, I stopped using alarms - I used my credit card instead. Yup, if I missed a chat room, I would swipe my card to get hourglass packs. You might be asked why, especially if I already played all the endings when I was a teen. It's simple - I had to get the Deep Story routes and play 707 and Jumin Han's routes.
I know it sounds odd that I'd replay the game again after so many years. But if you know, you know. Each character is so unique - they have their own speech patterns, texting habits, even their own fonts sometimes. They also have their own backstories and trauma. You wouldn't expect the psychological depth this dating game has, but it actually packs a punch - and it hits even harder since you're "messaging" them. It's as if you're unraveling who they are because you are ACTUALLY getting to know them through these messages.

I've downloaded dozens of dating games after Mystic Messenger, and while I've enjoyed them, none have hit as hard as that one. It's a game I play every couple of years, and yet I never grow tired of it.
