  • Primary Subject: Persona 6
  • Key Update: Unverified rumors from Chinese social media suggest the main character will reincarnate into another person's body, sparking a massive identity crisis.
  • Status: Leaked / Unconfirmed Speculation
  • Last Verified: July 15, 2026
  • Quick Answer: A Chinese forum leak claims the Persona 6 protagonist is a reincarnated soul in a stranger's body, throwing the series' Social Link system into question.

Even before Persona 6 was officially announced, rumors and leaks surrounding the topic made their rounds online.

And now, after the game has been announced and the trailer revealed, rumors are still coming out. Many sleuths have theorized about the game's true theme, and a supposed leak that has gained attention suggests that Persona 6 will center on reincarnation.

If that's true, I have some thoughts.

If the Persona 6 Rumors are Real, I Have a Lot of Questions

Recently, a well-known leaker on a Chinese forum claimed Persona 6 would center around reincarnation and identity.

They claim that the protagonist will reincarnate into another body. They will end up facing an existential crisis, questioning if they are the same person as they were before. If this is real, then it links up with past leaks claiming there will be two protagonists in Persona 6.

While unconfirmed, some people believe it. And if it does happen to be real, then I have a lot of questions.

We all know that social links are one of the biggest parts of the Persona series. Across all the games, we've seen how the protagonist forms bonds with other characters and how that will directly affect their team synergy, skills, and Personas. This will be the first Persona game where - if the rumors are true - the protagonist's friends might not know the person behind the face.

If you're piloting a body that isn't actually yours, are these people actually your friends? Every hangout will carry a massive asterisk in the protagonist's mind. The social links are meant to be the cozier part of Persona, but if the main character is reincarnated as someone else, this could instead be a depressing part instead - they may feel isolated despite physically being around people.

How will this affect their skills? Will team synergy still be a thing? So many questions left unanswered.

If it ends up this way, I don't know how I'd feel about it. I'm torn, because I loved seeing Joker get close to the Phantom Thieves in Persona 5 Royal - it was one of the best parts of the game. The same goes for Persona 3 Reload and Persona 4 Golden. I would hate to see the main character in Persona 6 suffer during a pivotal time.

However, it would also be extremely interesting to see a Persona game go this dark. From the teasers, we can tell the game will have more psychological roots, delving into more taboo topics. I'm keen to see how well the narrative plays out.

Of course, this could also be fake. ATLUS has neither confirmed nor denied the rumors, so let's not get ahead of ourselves!
