Flashier heroes came later, but this nihilistic leader remains the series' peak protagonist.

  • Quick Answer: Makoto Yuki stands out as the ultimate Persona protagonist because of his profound narrative evolution, his unique Death arcana connection, and his tragic self-sacrifice.

The Persona series is full of enthralling protagonists, but none stand out as much as Persona 3's Makoto Yuki.

Sure, Yu Narukami of Persona 4 is flashier, while Joker (Ren Amamiya) from Persona 5 is extremely charismatic, but Makoto is still the best-written character out of the bunch. He set the precedent for future Persona protagonists to come.

From plot to visuals, here are the reasons why Makoto Yuki reigns supreme.

He Has The Best Growth

When we first meet Yu and Ren, they are instantly charismatic and cool; Makoto is the total opposite. In fact, he actually starts kind of unlikeable.

Initially, Makoto doesn't care whether he lives or dies. He is a true nihilist who believes that life is inherently meaningless. However, as you build Social Links, you can see his demeanor shift. Making friends is changing his worldview, and by the end, he's fighting not just to save the world, but because he realized there are things worth living for.

Intense Way of Evoking His Persona

Each protagonist has had a different way to summon their persona. Joker tears off his mask, while Yu faces his inner card. Both are extremely cool, but Makoto's is the most raw and true to his character.

Makoto has to point a gun-like Evoker at his head and pull the trigger, as if accepting death. It serves as a metaphor for the things he conquers daily - he has learned to accept yet fear death to protect the lives of others.

He Is The Best Leader

Compared to the Phantom Thieves or the Investigation Team, who become close friends (even found family) rather quickly, the SEES team starts fractured.

Each person is traumatized, and the team is put together by circumstance. Because of that, they are constantly fighting and filled with grief. Makoto doesn't try to act as a loud cheerleader to boost morale. Instead, he serves as a steady anchor. He holds the team together and never gives up even when things look bleak.

He Made the Ultimate Sacrifice

At the end of Persona 4 and 5, both protagonists get a good ending with their friends. This isn't the case for Makoto. He chooses to give everything -even his life - to save humanity.

At the end of Persona 3, we see Makoto use his soul to seal away Nyx. He uses what little life force he has left to make it Graduation Day, all to keep his promise of meeting his friends on the rooftop one more time. Afterward, he passes away in Aigis's lap. It's a bittersweet ending, but it shows how strong a character Makoto is.

He Has The Best Visuals

Okay, this might be subjective. But compared to the other protagonists, Makoto's visual aesthetic is the best. Not just because it looks cool, but it paints a picture of who he is - an outsider.

When we first see Makoto, what stands out is the headphones firmly on his ears as he blocks out the world around him. His blue bangs cover one eye, as if indicating they are hiding parts of themselves from society. More often than not, his hands are in his pockets, making him appear guarded.

Only Protagonist to Hold the Death Arcana

Your starting Persona represents your inner self. While Yu and Joker feature mythological heroes and tricksters, respectively, Makoto is the only protagonist tied to the Death arcana.

This isn't surprising, but it definitely makes him the most unique since both Yu and Joker's Personas are under the Fool arcana. Since he carries the weight of mortality his entire life, Makoto has always understood and mastered the concept of death.

Only Dual-Wielding Protagonist

In Persona 4, Yu's weapon of choice is the katana. Joker, on the other hand, is a dagger. Makoto stands out since he can wield almost any weapon in Persona 3.

Makoto is able to wield shortswords, two-handed great swords, spears, and even birds. This makes him stand out even among the members of SEES, who each have their own specialities. His ability to adapt in combat proves that he is a true master-of-all-trades in terms of combat.
