With the start of Chapter 7 Season 2, Epic Games introduced a new mechanic: rivalries. Depending on the team you select (Team Foundation or Team Ice King) once you boot up the game, you'll be contributing to major community milestones; more immediately, you'll gain access to rivalries, able to 1v1 players from the opposite team.

How To Start a Rivalry In Fortnite
During a match, you can start a rivalry by heading to a Rivalry Screen. There are plenty across the island, and they are marked with a giant symbol that features two crossed swords.
Once you select "start a rivalry," a random player from the opposing team will be selected, and their approximate location will be marked on your map.
Do note that the opposing team will also get a notification that they've been selected to partake in a rivalry, but they won't see your approximate location, giving you a slight edge over them. This is what it looks like on the map.
From then on, you need to actually win the 1v1 to earn a rivalry win on your record and currency that you can spend at Rivalry Screens.
Some other important notes you need to keep in mind about the Fortnite rivalry system.
- Eliminations and damage are tracked across matches.
- If you’re rebooted in a match, the player who eliminated you is automatically your rival. You gain 2x the amount of Rival Credits for eliminating them.
