- Quick Answer: Spike Chunsoft's decision to use download-required game-key cards for Danganronpa 2x2 on Switch 2 frustrates physical collectors who prefer actual on-cartridge data.
When I first learned about Danganronpa 2x2, I was immediately hyped. In fact, it's on my Steam Wishlist as we speak.
What caught my eye was the introduction of Slayhem Mode - a new version of the story with a whole new set of murders and murderers. I had considered purchasing the game for my Switch, as I played all previous mainline titles on there. However, a recent announcement has me thinking twice.
Spike Chunsoft announced that the physical editions of Danganronpa 2x2 on the Switch 2 will come with a game-key card in all regions. The announcement was a major letdown, as it's the worst of both worlds.
At This Point, Just Release Danganronpa 2x2 Digitally
When publishers announce a physical edition, I expect a case with a cartridge I can stick into my console and play anytime. That's not the case with Danganronpa 2x2's game-key card.

A game key card is a cartridge, yes, but not the usual one we're used to. It forces players to download the game online, but still requires them to have the key card in the console to play. The fact that we're downloading a digital game but still needing to have the card in the slot is absurd.
If I have to waste my console's internal storage and rely on a network download anyway, why not just make it a fully digital release?

What's even more annoying is how the announcement lacked transparency. All Spike Chunsoft has stated is that it was due to "unavoidable reasons." What are those reasons? We don't know.
My theory is that it's a cost-cutting measure regarding cartridge production or publisher licensing fees. If I'm right, I wish they'd just say that - I'm sure players will be more receptive if it's to save money.

The phrasing almost implies that Danganronpa 2x2 might be too big for a Switch 2 cartridge, which is crazy. Danganronpa 2x2 is a visual novel without any action-packed combat. We've seen the past three mainline games work seamlessly on the Switch with a cartridge; what's different here? If CD Projekt can create a viable Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 cartridge, why can't Spike Chunsoft do the same with Danganronpa 2x2?
If they aren't willing to put the actual game data on a physical cartridge, Spike Chunsoft should just release the game digitally across all platforms. Don't make players pay physical edition prices for something as inconvenient as a game key card.
