While Makoto Naegi is the most popular protagonist from the Danganronpa franchise, I wouldn't say he's the best.

Don't get me wrong, he isn't bad. He was perfect for Trigger Happy Havoc, which established that hope will always overcome despair. But if we look at him among the lineup of Danganronpa protagonists, he doesn't even come close to being the best, at least not in my eyes.

Both Makoto Naegi and V3's Shuichi Saihara felt too good to be true. Naegi was the Ultimate Hope, brimming with unwavering optimism, while Shuichi was a detective genius. Hajime stands out by being the only protagonist without an Ultimate talent.

He represents the player's perspective better than the other two. He is pragmatic, cynical, and easily frustrated by the situation he's in - which shows how deeply human he is. The way he reacts to the killing game of Jabberwock Island feels far more realistic than Naegi's and Shuichi's.

Hajime's internal struggles are also extremely realistic. Throughout Goodbye Despair, we see him deal with a sense of inadequacy. His goal is to become someone special, and that drives all his choices. While Naegi and Shuichi have far more selfless reasons for survival, Hajime's desperate desire for self-worth makes him the most relatable out of the three.

Later on in the game (spoiler alert), we discovered that the Hajime Hinata outside the Neo World Program had sacrificed his identity to become Izuru Kamakuru - the literal epitome of human talent. It's a twist no one saw coming and fully critiques Hope's Peak Academy's obsession with talent. It also paints a bigger picture of how insecure Hajime really was. His quest for talent ultimately led to his despair in the real world, while in Jabberwock Island, it was discovered that his supposed flaw is where he found value.

Beyond his unique persona, Hajime had more dynamic relationships compared to Naegi and Shuichi. His complicated friendship with Nagito Komaeda was one of the highlights of the game. Nagito's toxic obsession with Ultimate talents directly challenges Hajime's insecurities, forcing Hajime to find himself on his own terms.

His relationship with Chiaki Nanami was also interesting. Throughout the game, we see Chiaki as an emotional anchor - someone who helps him accept himself for who he is despite his lack of an Ultimate talent.

For a protagonist who spent the whole game finding himself, this feels like the perfect ending.

Hajime's strength lies in his imperfection. Hajime, who is constantly surrounded by Ultimates, feels deeply human.
