  • Quick Answer: Final Fantasy Resonance is a complete reimagining of a gacha game, meticulously reworked into a full-fledged console RPG with turn-based combat.

Square Enix wants to make sure fans know the upcoming HD-2D Final Fantasy Resonance is not just a mere cash-grab using assets from a now-defunct gacha game, Brave Exvius. It's a full reimagining and rework of the project that will stand on its own as a proper RPG worthy of carrying the Final Fantasy brand.

In an interview with Automaton, producer Keisuke Nakashima stated that the team went as far as changing story scenarios, despite Resonance being mostly inspired by season 1 of BE.

"While using FFBE as a base, we completely rewrote the scenario to make it work as a console RPG. We’ve revised all of the dialogues, and in some cases, we’ve even made the bold decision to attempt to rearrange the plot order. Furthermore, all of the side-quests and side-content feature completely new scenarios."

As to why put so much effort into making it a stand-alone playable experience, Nakashima put it simply: it was too good to be forgotten.

"I thought it would be a shame for such a wonderful game to become unplayable via mobile, and that’s one of the reasons I decided to create Final Fantasy Resonance for consoles."

Resonance carries important weight for the Final Fantasy franchise, as it's a return to the beloved turn-based combat fans had been begging Square to reconsider for further entries. On top of that, it's surprisingly the first HD-2D experience for the IP, a now iconic pixel art style that Square has refined with franchises like Octopath, Triangle Strategy, and even used for Dragon Quest Remakes.

On that subject, Nakashima added: " I personally wanted to be able to play a new Final Fantasy game which starts by having to sit down and think deeply about how you’re going to build your party. I knew that there also must be other people that are craving a classic Final Fantasy experience, which is why I decided to develop Final Fantasy Resonance."

Overall, I really can't wait for FF Resonance. While I adore action RPGs and I'm incredibly excited for Revelation (and Tifa being in Street Fighter 6) I can't deny the appeal of an old-school Final Fantasy is still something I crave from time to time.

As a reminder, Final Fantasy Resonance is releasing this October 22 on PC, Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2.
