It’s officially been three years since Square Enix announced the existence of Kingdom Hearts 4, and fans are still waiting for some new information about this upcoming installment. Aside from that fancy trailer with nice-looking graphics, there have been no updates from creator Tetsuya Namura or publishing company Square Enix. Disney hasn’t said anything because they usually wait before something big is confirmed for this series.

The pain fans of the series feel is constant, but it's not unfamiliar. Based on the long waiting time for Kingdom Hearts 3, it’s clear that waiting for new entries in this series is going to hurt.

Fans of the series will remember how long it took before they got their hands on the third game. After all, the second game came out on PS2 in 2005, while the third entry was released in 2019.

To give Square Enix some slack, Kingdom Hearts games were being released before the official third game came out. Some of these fans conveniently forget that they received two DS games, a PSP game, a 3DS game, and remastered collections for the PS3 and modern consoles. Even if the wait was long, there were releases to tide fans over, and that’s not even mentioning the mobile games.

Compared to the wait for Kingdom Hearts 4, fans don’t have as many games in the series to kill time with. Sure, they have various action RPGs from Square Enix to play, including Final Fantasy 7 Remake featuring Cloud from Kingdom Hearts, but those aren’t official entries.

A mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was also announced around the same time as KH4, but this title has seemingly disappeared. Square Enix and Nomura are working hard to connect these games cohesively or, at the very least, provide quality experiences for fans.

It’s important to note that our complaining doesn’t mean we want Square Enix to rush Kingdom Hearts 4 or even Missing-Link. We understand developers need a lot of time to work on games like this. The game’s story has always been pretty complex, so writing another chapter with Sora and crew can’t be easy.

Would it have been better if Square Enix hadn’t released a trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4? Probably not. The developers wanted fans to know that this new game was being developed, and they did so with style. It’s just a shame that there isn’t a filler game we can play in between these releases.

No, we are not playing that rhythm game. We don’t care how canon it is.
