It took a lot longer than it should have, but PlayStation has finally removed the region lock for some of its Steam games. This means fans in those hundred or so countries can finally play Helldivers 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 legally. While not every game under Sony’s umbrella has been released, progress has been made.
Users like Wario64 on X noticed that the regional restrictions for some of Sony’s games were removed on SteamDB. This includes popular titles like God of War Ragnarok and The Last of Us Part 2. Fans then checked the Steam store to see that these games were finally available in their country again.
As a Filipino, I was thrilled to see Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered on the Steam store. While Sony didn’t put these games on sale, which would have been a decent apology, fans are just happy that they can purchase these PlayStation games on Steam. They shouldn’t have been removed in the first place, but at least something was done about it.
Most fans assumed this was done after Stellar Blade removed its region lock before release. This led to the sultry action RPG getting a ton of sales all over the world, quickly becoming a sales success for PlayStation and Shift Up. Not long after, Sony seemingly pulled the plug and made these games available to a wider market.
Sadly, not every PlayStation game on Steam is available for purchase. At the time of writing, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut still isn’t available, so it looks like there are still some big restrictions. Hopefully, these can soon be solved, because Ghost of Yotei and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls look like promising PlayStation projects.
The weird power trip PlayStation got from restricting access to their games has concluded, and fans all over can finally play these titles. Whether it’s Stellar Blade or Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, there’s plenty of reason to celebrate.
