Avowed impressed RPG fans when it came out earlier this year, as Obsidian presented it as a more bite-sized version of an Elder Scrolls game, but with better graphics. With the new 1.5 update, an effort was made to make this RPG more playable on Steam Deck, and Valve has approved of this. This RPG now features the shiny “Steam Deck Verified” badge, allowing fans to try it with confidence.
Steam Deck fans tend to have mixed thoughts about the “Steam Deck Verified” rating, as it doesn’t always reflect how playable the game is. Many fans are still having nightmares about playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on the handheld, although it’s improved. Obsidian appears to have put in a bit more effort to optimize this, as specific options are available that will enhance gameplay on the portable system.
In the game’s Steam update (via Gaming on Linux), Obsidian confirmed that Avowed will now correctly turn off graphic upscaling to make this title more playable on the Deck. In addition to that, a 40 FPS limit option was also added, which is usually what most Steam Deck users go for when adjusting their games. This update also includes the usual bug fixes, which are typical.
Considering the release of Oblivion Remastered and the upcoming Skyblivion, we’re sure some fans may have forgotten about Obsidian’s RPG. Most Xbox fans probably tried it on Game Pass and then got distracted by the other titles available in that service. This update may prompt fans to revisit it, especially since the Steam Deck remains a relatively popular choice among gamers.
Avowed received positive reviews at launch, although it was largely forgotten in a few months. While the game was good, it didn’t become a huge talking point and got somewhat lost as other hot titles emerged. This could change if the game eventually releases on different systems, as Xbox no longer places a high value on exclusivity.
