Oblivion Remastered is a prettier version of Bethesda’s original RPG, for better or worse. The beautiful graphics are great, but glitches and bugs that are a “core” part of this entry are still there. Not everyone is onboard with the buggy nature of Bethesda games, and the Skyblivion devs are hoping their version is a tad smoother.
During an interview with PC Gamer, Skyblivion Renewal Project lead Rebelzize talked about ironing out some of the more frustrating aspects of Oblivion. Rebelzize says some of these annoying bits are still in Oblivion Remastered, since it’s a faithful remaster, but they won’t be in their fan-made remake. Some of the promised changes made include more rewarding dungeons and being able to exit them instantly upon completion, among other changes.
"I think for a lot of people that play Oblivion now, it will be frustrating at times," said Rebel, "there's just old game design that doesn't really translate anymore, and some of that is still present in the remaster from Bethesda themselves, because they've not remade it, which is a key difference [from Skyblivion], which is good for us."
Only Bethesda can get away with keeping the bugs from their older games, as many fans find them entertaining. The company hasn’t changed at all, as Starfield is also an open-world RPG that’s easy to break and exploit. Still, fans do buy the company’s games in droves, so they’re doing something right.
Having both games exist at the same time is going to be interesting, since they’re both updated versions of the same RPG. Admittedly, more fans will have access to Oblivion Remastered, since that’s an official release on multiple consoles. This fan-made remake is great, but it’s only going to be home to PC players who really enjoy Skyrim’s intense modding scene.
Even with that small caveat, it’s good that Skyblivion exists and that fans have the option to play this unique remake. Companies like Nintendo or Capcom would have taken this game down years ago, but Bethesda’s admiration for modders has allowed this title to exist and thrive. Whatever your thoughts are about Bethesda’s games, this is classy stuff that isn’t seen with other major publishers.
That’s everything we know about Skyblivion being completely different from Oblivion Remastered.
