  • Quick Answer: Persona 6 is Atlus’s upcoming mainline JRPG featuring a distinct green aesthetic, leaving fans eager to see if its UI matches Persona 5’s iconic standard.

One of the best and most underrated aspects of Persona 5 is its unique UI design.

Unlike other turn-based games, Persona 5's UI doesn't just consist of boring lists. Instead, it uses high-fashion pop art with the game's iconic red, black, and white color scheme, becoming an integral part of the Persona identity. When I think Persona, the pop-punk style and fluid animations immediately come to mind.

Persona 6 features an entirely different aesthetic - dark, neon green, creepy. While it's intriguing, it makes me wonder if Atlus will be able to deliver and match the iconic UI of its previous title.

I Hope Persona 6's UI Is as Good as Persona 5

Let's be real, Persona 5 set a high bar. Its UI has basically become the face of the franchise as a whole while also setting a new standard for JRPGs.

One of my favorite things about Persona 5 was the dynamic red-and-black graphics and the showdown sequences. It made boss fights feel dynamic, and dungeon crawling for Mementos felt like something I naturally wanted to do rather than simply being forced to. For Persona 5, the magic was the fact that command menus were part of the narrative.

It was also executed in a way that made it efficient to play. The UI mapped actions directly to face buttons, so I didn't have to click several commands just to summon a different Persona or use an item. Every time I play Persona 5, I reach a flow state during combat - I fight based on elemental weakness, trigger an All-Out Attack, and move on to the next enemy.

With each Persona title, Atlus has pushed the UI boundaries. But now I fear they may have reached their peak with Persona 5.

Since Persona 6 has such a different tone from Persona 5 based on what we currently know, it wouldn't make sense for them to lean into Persona 5's punk graffiti look or even Metaphor ReFantazio's oil paintings. To stand on its own feet, Persona 6 will need its separate unique visual identity.

Of course, the story is important - if the plot isn't good, who'll play it? But for me, the heart of the experience of a Persona game lies in the design. I loved the calendar transitions, NPC interactions, and combat scenes of Persona 5. I genuinely believe it's the best out of all the Persona games (Persona 3 Reload included), so Persona 6 has a steep hill to climb.

But if Atlus can reinvent the UI to feel smooth while matching the eerie vibe of Persona 6, then it won't just match Persona 5's design; it will probably redefine game design all over again.

Here's hoping the next Persona game's menu will make our jaws drop!
