The rumored Persona 4 remake appears to be real after all. Many assumed we would get one after Persona 3 Reload smashed the sales charts and received plenty of good reviews. It looks like Atlus will be changing the voice cast completely for this remake, since that’s also what they did with Reload.
As the Persona 4 remake seemingly inches closer towards a release, fans who miss the old cast can always play Persona 4 Golden. While we’re sure the new cast will do really well with this remake, the Golden re-release ensures that these older voices will be preserved. If anything, this proves how important preserving older games can be.
What happened to the old Persona 4 cast?
Despite the remake not being officially announced, voice actor Yuri Lowenthal seemingly confirmed the game’s existence by saying he wasn’t returning in a now-deleted post. Erin Fitzgerald also said she wouldn’t be returning for this remake.
Lowenthal and Fitzgerald played Yosuke and Chie, respectively, and fans adored their performances in Persona 4 Golden. Fitzgerald actually replaced the original Chie voice actor from the PS2 version, and many saw her as the definitive voice for this character. Yuri has voiced Yosuke since the original PS2 version and was also the protagonist in the original Persona 3.
Other voice actors from Golden haven’t said they would be returning, but we doubt it if Lowenthal and Fitzgerald’s comments are anything to go by. After all, Troy Baker is now one of the world’s most-requested voice actors in gaming, famously portraying Joel in The Last of Us. Laura Bailey and Sam Riegel are also acclaimed voice actors and part of the DnD podcast Critical Role.
Is Persona 4 Golden still worth playing?
Absolutely. That classic Persona gameplay has aged like fine wine, and its simple graphics style is still very charming.
Persona 4 Golden was originally an enhanced PS Vita port of the original PS2 game, and quickly became the main reason to own this under-appreciated handheld console. Like the Persona 5 Royal re-release, Golden added double team moves, new side activities to take part in, brand-new story segments and dungeons, to name a few.
Golden’s re-release on modern systems made this game 60 FPS on modern systems, even on the Nintendo Switch. It doesn’t have many new features, but none were needed considering how much was added to that Vita port. The fact that it's readily available on all systems makes this version necessary.
More importantly, if fans don’t jive with the cast of Persona 4 remake, they can always go back to Golden.
We’re sure the new cast is going to do really well, but fans who’ll miss Yuri Lowenthal as Yosuke or Johnny Young Bosch as Adachi always have this port for some of that nostalgia. It’s a shame that they couldn’t come back, but we hope they at least make cameos in the remake.
