The recent Xbox layoffs are a disgrace, showing how this publisher continues to be run by greed and incompetence. Microsoft is fine and will continue to thrive, so seeing them fire people just to save a few bucks is insulting. Canceling games that were in development is almost as bad, especially since titles like Perfect Dark looked exciting.
Had Microsoft decided not to lay anyone off, we think that the Perfect Dark reboot would have been perfect on Switch 2. Many fans still associate classic Rare properties with Nintendo, so it would have been fitting if they brought over this promising first-person shooter to the hybrid system.
Alas, that’s now an alternate reality, and not something that’s going to happen in our current lifetime.
It’s hard to praise Xbox for anything right now, but the company has been more than willing to share its properties on other consoles. We’re going to get Gears of War on PS5 soon, which is a crazy statement to anyone who was alive back in 2007. The company even actively brought Cuphead and Ori to Switch, both of which are excellent ports on that handheld.
Of course, you could argue that bringing these properties to other consoles is what started the downfall of Xbox. With the company’s reliance on Game Pass and their “Xbox anywhere” slogan, they didn’t really see a need to keep their titles exclusive. Then again, it was their general incompetence handling the Xbox One’s reveal that eventually led to them bringing their games to other systems in the first place.
Regardless of what happened in the past, many agreed that Xbox’s initial team-up with Nintendo was a good thing. Bringing games like Cuphead and the Ori duology to Switch continues to be an inspired decision, one that helped raise the profile of both series. All of that made us think that Perfect Dark would be, well, perfect on the Switch 2.
Since Nintendo’s new hybrid console is a powerhouse, this system could potentially run the Xbox shooter, albeit with a few downgrades here and there. Even then, most fans wouldn’t notice, and they would have a good time with this FPS on Switch 2. After all, the system is already home to Borderlands 4 and will house other shooters in the future.
A combination of N64 nostalgia and the Switch 2’s renewed power would have made Perfect Dark a standout shooter on the powerful handheld. It could have even led to other Rare games coming to the system. As it stands, none of this will ever happen, and it’s all Microsoft’s fault.
