Gears of War: Reloaded was originally met with a lot of anticipation, as this shooter is coming to PlayStation 5 and Steam for the first time ever. The game was still going to be a treat for Xbox Series and Windows fans, since everyone loves improved visuals. However, Xbox fans will be disappointed to know this isn’t a brand-new remaster.

Despite the new tagline, Gears of War: Reloaded is just a 4K version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. While this isn’t the worst thing ever, we can see why Microsoft decided to give Ultimate Edition owners a free code for this game.

Microsoft and The Coalition previously stated that this remaster was built off the bones of the Ultimate Edition. Naturally, fans thought that this was going to be a much better version of the game with all-new improvements. While it’s nice having the game run in a higher resolution and better framerate, this is pretty disappointing for Xbox fans.

Fans probably wouldn’t have been so disappointed if the marketing for this didn’t make it seem like a whole new game. After all, Microsoft and The Coalition could have easily re-released Ultimate Edition for PS5 and Steam. That isn’t what happened, and fans were misled by that new Reloaded subtitle.

We understand why PS5 and Steam fans are excited to try out Gears of War: Reloaded, since this is the shooter’s debut on those consoles. The series has never been on a PlayStation console, for obvious reasons. Humorously, Gears 5 and Gears Tactics are on Steam, but none of the other entries are available there. It would have been easier to port Ultimate Edition to Steam, though you could argue that’s technically happening here with Reloaded.

Overall, we’re curious about how this will affect the perception of this release. The original Gears of War is still a great game, and the Ultimate Edition was a great remaster of that title. It just would have been better if they were more honest about this remaster’s roots.
