- Quick Answer: The officially announced Ocarina of Time Switch 2 remake aims to retain the original's core narrative while modernizing visual fidelity, UI design, and gameplay controls.
Whenever I think of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, I remember how much fun I had exploring Hyrule. But there’s definitely something I don’t miss: the clunky UI.
While the 3DS remake made navigating menus easier than the original N64, the improvement wasn't something to rave about, and now that we know the Switch 2 Ocarina of Time remake is officially in development, Nintendo still needs to work on a few things to refresh the overall experience.
If you're like me and have spent way too much time swapping boots in the Water Temple, then you know what I mean. I'm hoping that the menu system receives a major overhaul for the Switch 2 remake. Here's what Nintendo should upgrade.
Nintendo, Please Fix Ocarina of Time‘s Clunky UI
When I played Ocarina of Time on the 3DS, I remember having to tap the bottom screen to swap the Iron Boots or check dungeon maps. And while I’ve heard this is leagues better than the N64 controls, it still didn't feel smooth.

I hated the fact that I had to constantly look down away from the main display to tap sub-menus on the bottom screen; it ruined the flow of dungeon exploration. I’m hoping that with the Switch 2 remake, the menus feel more integrated. After all, it’s just one screen.
Something unique to the 3DS was gyro aiming - we had to move the console to use the Slingshot and Fairy Bow. While it seemed cool at the time, tilting the console meant we were constantly breaking the 3D effect and losing track of camera angles in tight corridors like Forest Temple.
For the Switch 2 remake, I hope Nintendo finds a way to navigate these areas and target enemies without feeling like I'm losing out on the graphics. I want my gameplay to feel fluid and natural - I want to feel like I'm really in Hyrule.

You know what else needs an overhaul? Combat. On the 3Ds, we would stand still behind a shield and literally wait for the enemy to hit you. I'm hoping and praying that the Ocarina of Time remake will feature Link actively parrying, dodging, and countering aggressive enemy behaviours with high-stakes duels.

Link's journey in Hyrule is what makes Ocarina of Time so good. They don't need to touch the story, but Nintendo must ensure that there is little to no mechanical friction.
