Layered armor in Monster Hunter Wilds is the game's version of transmog or transmogrify, blending the words "transfigure" and "modify". It refers to a feature that allows players to change the appearance of their character's armor piece without changing the stats, basically a costume.
While Monster Hunter Wilds' fun comes from crafting armor pieces to build your own sets according to your playstyle, seeing your character in unique costumes is still enjoyable. You can even disable it altogether just to flex your raw strength.

How to Unlock Layered Armor
If you have been grinding Monster Hunter Wilds, it would not take long to unlock and be able to craft layered armor. You just need to reach High Rank to be able to transmog. You can do so by continuing with the story quest until around Chapter 4 and other available assignments.
Other than the traditional way of crafting, you can buy Layered Armor DLCs that are available in the store such as the Fencer's Eyepatch, Oni Horns Wig, and the Feudal Soldier set.
If you pre-ordered the game on any platform (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC), you should have received the Guild Knight Layered Armor Set along with a Talisman Hope Charm as a bonus. So be sure to equip the set if you want to look like a cool knight!
How to Craft Layered Armor
To start crafting or making your layered armor, you will need to go to Gemma (the Smithy). She is the NPC to talk to about forging or upgrading your weapons and armor. She is found in all the base camps after you meet her near the start of the game.
Speak to Gemma and choose "I'd like to manage my equipment" and then "Forge/Upgrade Armor". You will then be taken to the armor menu where you can browse and choose from various selections. You will see what it looks like as there is a preview. Take note that not all armor can be turned into layered armor. Unfortunately, Low-Rank armor cannot be worn as layered armor.
You may craft any of the High-Rank armor that is available from this menu as long as you have the necessary forging materials on hand. If you see a Low-Rank armor that you like the look of, you may look through the High-Rank armor and find one that looks almost identical to it.
If you don't have enough materials, you will need to go on hunts for the specific materials, and it may take some perseverance. For example, if you want the Nu Udra set, you would need materials such as the Nu Udra Hide+, Oilmucus+, Flamegem, and Certificate S.
Once you have crafted the armor you want to wear as a costume, make sure to follow our guide on how to equip layered armor.
