After much anticipation, Bungie finally released the gameplay trailer for the return of Marathon. The title was first developed and published by Bungie in 1994 for the Apple Macintosh, with the game taking place several centuries into the future in outer space as players attempted to stop an alien invasion aboard a colony ship named, well, the Marathon.

However, the latest installment doesn't serve as a classic remake or remaster and instead returns as a team-based extraction shooter. Players will be able to choose their cybernetic mercenary Runners along with unique abilities and six different classes as they battle rival teams and security forces for weapons and upgrades. Survive and the loot is yours to keep!

During the official gameplay overview trailer, it was also announced that Marathon will include seasonal content, with endgame challenges, ranked play, discovering challenges, seasonal storytelling, community events, and more coming in season 1.

According to GameSpot, who've had a hands-on with the game, Marathon will have a battle pass system and 3 maps, with the fourth map arriving shortly after launch.

The PvP extraction shooter is scheduled to release on September 23, coming to PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5. Even better, you won't need to have a PSN account to play the game on other platforms besides PS5.

If you can't wait that long, Bungie confirmed a Closed Alpha test period is on the way and urged players to join the official Marathon Discord for more information in the coming days. If you want to have a chance to be invited to the Marathon Closed Alpha, you can find out more here.
