I have never played Ghost Recon Wildlands, and honestly, I never considered it. Until I saw the Last Rites update, that is.

I've always known of the existence of Ghost Recon Wildlands - I just never felt compelled to play it. It just always felt like any other military tactical shooter game, and we all know there are plenty of those on the market. I prefer games with intimate stories and lore, and Wildlands just didn't have that for me.

What flipped the switch was being introduced to The Last Rites update during the Ghost Recon 25th anniversary stream. It wasn't the new assault rifles that caught my eye - it was the haunting presence of the new villain La Llorona. Maybe it's because I don't know much about the game, but I never expected Wildlands to have a masked, vengeful myth and her 'Los Penitentes' cultists.

It almost feels like a psychological folk-horror game rather than a military shooter.

Another thing that piqued my interest is the fact that The Predator mission is making a return. I've heard about it in passing, and it's always raved about as a legendary mission that gamers yearn to come back to. I assumed it would forever be pulled from the map, but hearing that it's making a return has me curious about what all the hype is about.

It feels like this is the perfect time to jump into Bolivia in Wildlands. Besides the new villain and The Predator mission, the game has been updated to feature 4K and 60 FPS visuals. If I do choose to play it, I'll be skipping all the old hardware compromises and will be able to enjoy the game at its best state.

It took nine years, a terrifying cult, and a trophy-hunting alien mission to get me here, but the second The Last Rites update drops, Ghost Recon Wildlands is getting checked out.
