On July 30, it was announced that Super Mario Sunshine is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 via Nintendo Switch Online.

The game will officially be added to the service on August 13, 2026. The game will be playable on Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics for Switch 2. The original version came out in 2002, and honestly, I'm surprised it took so long for the game to get a Switch port.

Why? Because it's arguably one of the best 3D Mario games out there.

One of the few games I was able to play on the GameCube was Super Mario Sunshine. I remember having so much fun in Isle Delfino, helping Mario clean the island and stopping his doppelganger who falsely framed him for vandalism.

For years, I've been yearning for a handheld version of the game. I've been wanting to re-experience the joys of playing Super Mario Sunshine for years, and yet plenty of handheld consoles have been released, and the game has never been re-released or remade.

Some people might agree - they might say the blue-coin hunting and the camera jank make the game unplayable. I beg to differ. The water-hovering and cleaning mechanics make Sunshine one of the most unique Mario games to ever come out. I definitely believe we need more momentum-based games, and I'm glad Sunshine is coming out on the Switch to bridge the gap.

And you know what else? We need more games that are vibrant. Sunshine gave us vibrant seaside colors, sunny beaches, and a relaxing tropical soundtrack. It was bright and cozy. I'm glad we're finally taking that on the go.

Why did Nintendo lock away one of its most unique titles for so long? The fact that a generation has missed out on Sunshine simply because they refused to port it sooner is wild. But I'm more than ready to relive the game again on my Switch.
