You'll face many enemies throughout Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and most of them can be challenging to defeat. It will become easier once you get used to your characters' kits, such as having the best build for Monoco.

There are multiple choices for Monoco's build, especially for his skills, since there are a lot of them. This includes weapon choices and attribute focus, along with the Pictos and Luminas you can equip him with.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Best Monoco Build

Monoco is the loveable and funny Gestral, a good friend of Verso's. He wields a staff with a bell at the end. He lives in his station with the Grandis and is always up for a fight, even challenging Verso many times throughout the journey.

Understanding Monoco's Kit

Monoco, like other members of Expedition 33 such as Maelle, has his unique kit. Unlike the others, Monoco unlocks his skill by collecting the feet of the Nevrons they defeat. Nevrons whose feet can be acquired have a symbol next to their name. He will need to be active in the party to be able to collect them. Due to this, there's a high chance you will miss many of his skills if he isn't always included in your party.

Moving on to his mechanic or passive, he has a Bestial Wheel that will cycle through the Masks in a particular order. Some weapons alter this rotation; it can be counter-clockwise, or even start on a specific Mask (Like the one I'm using, Boucharo, which allows Monoco to start on Agile Mask).

Five Masks are on the Bestial Wheel:

  • Balanced Mask
  • Agile Mask
  • Heavy Mask
  • Caster Mask
  • Almighty Mask

The Mask that you always aim for is the Almighty Mask. This upgrades all of Monoco's skills, regardless of the specific Mask it requires. It's always best to use the corresponding skill since you'll be able to deal more damage with the skill's specific Mask. For example, you'll deal more damage with Chapelier Slash if you have the Agile Mask.

Hybrid Build

Unlike characters such as Lune, who may have a more concrete or specific path when it comes to her build, Monoco is a true wildcard. His range is quite crazy; you can mix and match his skills however you like. I believe that it will be best to have at least one skill per Mask so that you can take advantage of his Bestial Wheel.

Weapon

Monoco may be rich in the number of skills he can have, but he doesn't have many choices for weapons. In the beginning, I just chose whichever weapon was available. However, here are his best weapons:

  • Nusaro
    • Element: Dark
    • Attribute focus: Vitality, Agility

Nusaro is an excellent weapon in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Act II onwards. It is recommended for players who enjoy parrying (which players should really learn how to do), as parrying increases the Bestial Wheel by 1 at Level 4. Level 10 allows you to deal 30% more damage with an upgraded Mask, and grants 1 AP on each Mask change at Level 20. This can be picked up in Old Lumiere (which you'll have to navigate and explore through since there's no minimap).

  • Joyaro
    • Element: Lightning
    • Attribute focus: Defense, Agility

The end game weapon of choice will be Joyaro (but you're more than welcome to choose Nusaro if you want). However, Joyaro is an excellent weapon as it starts you off with the Almighty Mask. This allows you to use any Monoco skill and enjoy the increased damage it deals. It will also double the Break damage you deal in Almighty Mask at Level 20.

However, you'll have to be good at parrying and dodging to get the most out of the Level 10 passive. You'll have 20% increased damage for each consecutive turn that you don't receive damage, and it can stack up to 5 times.

Skills

Monoco has the widest skill set in all of Expedition 33, allowing him to be a support or damage dealer depending on the skills you equip him with. It's best to have one skill for each Mask that he has to take advantage of the Bestial Wheel. Here are some of the best skills that you can equip:

Almighty Mask

  • Duallist Storm
  • Lampmaster Light (Better for longer boss fights)

Agile Mask

  • Chapelier Slash (Applies Mark)
  • Chevalier Piercing (Love this for piercing through the Shields at a low cost)

Balanced Mask

  • Contorsionniste Blast (Heal and damage in one skill)
  • Clair Enfeeble

Caster Mask

  • Potier Energy (Gives AP to 1-3 Allies)
  • Creation Void (9 AP Cost but huge damage)

Heavy Mask

  • Crueler Barrier (Provides Shields to Ally)
  • Sakapatate Slam (High damage)

You may choose one from each of these Masks, which focuses on a hybrid build for Monoco. I love having this build since he can deal tremendous damage while providing support to the team. This allows for balance and focus on your DPS of your choice to deal the damage to the enemies.

Pictos and Luminas

As for Monoco's Pictos and Luminas, I prioritize having the additional APs. You want to get A LOT of AP generation since his skills are so demanding on AP. Besides this, I also get support and offensive Pictos and Luminas for his survivability and damage. Make sure to get the following Pictos and Luminas:

  • Energising Start (I to IV)
  • Energising Turn
  • Energising Attack
  • Energising Break
  • Energising Jump
  • Healing Parry
  • Healing Counter
  • Immaculate
  • Inverted Affinity (Though you have an option not to choose this, since you can't heal for 3 turns)
  • Auto Regen (Remove this if you're using Inverted Affinity)

How you build Monoco in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is up to you. He's really flexible and can fit in any team composition. Plus, he has amusing dialogue and is a fun character overall.
