Monolith Games is behind the hit Shadow of Mordor games, which are based on Middle-earth. Many fans were excited when it was announced that they would be working on a Wonder Woman title for DC.
Flash forward to this week, and word has come out that Wonder Woman was rebooted and canceled, and Monolith was closing down. While fans were bummed that the game wasn’t going to happen, comic book writer and consultant for the game Gail Simone wrote a sort of eulogy to the game and the closing studio.
A Showpiece Epic
After the cancellation announcement, Simone took to Twitter to say some ‘important things’ about the studio, and she revealed that Wonder Woman would have been the big DC game that fans had been waiting for this whole time. She says:
The rest of the thread has Simone talking about how passionate all the developers were about Wonder Woman and how the game had a ‘dream team’ behind it that ensured many things were accurate to DC lore.
While there is currently a lot of finger-pointing as to why the game closed down, Simone says that everyone she had worked with on Monolith and WB sides had nothing but enthusiasm for the game and were completely supportive of what they were doing.
Simone doesn’t explain why she thinks the game and studio were shut down, but she wishes the best for the studio's members. She writes, “Sometimes, you give your all, and it doesn’t work out… But that was an amazing team, and I can only hope they continue to make brilliant games. Someone is going to snap them all up and set a new industry standard; I know it.”
The best that WB said about the cancellation was that it was a ‘tough decision,’ and:
“Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities.”
What was Wonder Woman Going to be About?
The Wonder Woman game was originally announced three years ago and was hyped as a AAA action-adventure game. Check this out:
The official description for the game read:
“She will fight to unite the warriors of two worlds. You are Wonder Woman.
“The single-player open-world action game will introduce an original story set in the DC Universe and allow players to become Diana of Themyscira in the fight to unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world.”
It was also said to be powered by the Nemesis System, which was used in the Shadow of Mordor games. The system introduced an intricate hierarchy of tribes, and players could challenge leaders to win the loyalty of specific factions.
It’s unclear how that would be changed in Wonder Woman, but there would be two different factions (humans and Amazon), and Diana would have to fight her way to lead both to peace.
It’s a shame that Wonder Woman should be canceled, especially after so many DC flops like Kill the Justice League, but with enough buzz, maybe WB can revisit the game down the line.
