No official remake announcement from Ubisoft for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, but the internet won’t stop talking about it. And for good reason, as it could be finally become a reality.

In the last few weeks, low-key updates and unclear hints have made a rumor that’s been around for a while feel more concrete.

Ubisoft is getting ready to revive one of its most popular games following sudden updates on Steam and clues from Edward Kenway’s voice actor.

Is Black Flag Getting a Remake?

One of the clearest signs something is brewing came from a subtle update to Black Flag’s Steam page.

Users have spotted that the game quietly received several new features, including surround sound, mouse-only controls, save-anytime functionality, and adjustable difficulty levels.

None of those options appeared in the 2013 launch, and Ubisoft hasn’t issued a patch explaining their addition. The additions have led many to interpret them as groundwork for a remake rather than a basic update.

The theory picked up steam after fans noticed newer Assassin’s Creed games include similar features, meaning Ubisoft might have moved the game to a modern engine.

Adding credibility to the theory, Ubisoft updated the store listing itself, not just the files. Longtime players and collectors worry the original Black Flag could disappear once the remake launches.

Did Edward Kenway’s Voice Actor Just Tease the Remake?

The Steam update began attracting attention just as Edward Kenway’s voice actor, Matt Ryan, hinted at something during a recent fan event.

When asked if he would revisit Black Flag, he replied that players “might have to beat it again,” which sounds vague but is hard to ignore given the timing. Not long after that clip made its way online, Ubisoft France joined the fun.

Their official Twitter account shared a short video of the original Black Flag, captioned with a simple phrase that translated to “Mentally, I am here.” On its own, it might have just felt nostalgic, but when you add everything else, it came off like a cheeky wink.

Have There Been Signs of a Remake Before?

Rumors of a Black Flag remake surfaced before when reports in 2023 said it was greenlit internally, and fans recently noticed Edward Kenway missing from Pure Arts’ Assassin’s Creed statues, possibly on purpose.

Although no formal reveal has occurred yet, it’s widely believed that the project has been in development for some time. Initially, sources pointed to a 2025 release window.

However, after delays hit Assassin’s Creed Shadows, there’s a chance the remake may be pushed into 2026. Still, with Ubisoft confirmed to appear at Gamescom later this year, many expect a full reveal to be just around the corner.
