- Quick Answer: The best video game collector's editions, such as Halo 3 and The Witcher 3, feature high-quality physical replicas, statues, and unique merchandise that elevate the ownership experience.
When a new video game is released, there are times when they provide players with more than just its standard edition. If its developers deem it worthy, or popularity and credibility are high enough to warrant it, chances are it will also receive a collector's edition, where not only will you get the game, but also physical merchandise and collectibles tied to it.
Not all of them are worth getting, with the one for the upcoming GTA 6 being a prime example, but the ones that are deliver more than what you could ever ask for. If you're curious which ones would have given you bang for your buck, then here are what I think are some of the best video game collector's editions.
1. Halo 3 Legendary Collector's Edition

While Halo 3 had a standard and limited collector's edition, it was the legendary version that people sought after. The main thing that everyone wanted from it was the undeniably cool Mark IV helmet, and while it wasn't wearable, it was amazing to hold and look at.
If that wasn't enough, there was also a storyboard art collection that gave you glimpses of the concepts before the final release, and a disc with behind-the-scenes footage of the game's production. It was all cool, and worth the extra money spent.
2. Fallout 4

Although Fallout 4 may be considered one of, if not the weakest entry in the series, there is no denying that its collector's edition offered the coolest stuff. If you bought it back then, you'd be one of the lucky people with a wearable Pip-Boy replica. You wrapped it around your wrist, and it let you feel like you're an actual vault dweller.
That alone was worth getting the collector's edition, but you also got a cool perk poster, a pocket guide, and an incredible-looking capsule case to keep you got. Everything the collector's edition offered captured the essence of the game, so I hope many purchased it back when it was available.
3. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

The Handsome Collection is already worth it on its own, giving you Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, but the Claptrap-in-a-Box Edition made it even more so. As expected, you get both games, all the DLC packs, a collectible steel case, and some exclusive lithographs.
But what made it really unique was the controllable replica of Claptrap. It wasn't a figurine that would normally come in collector's editions; you could actually move it around, have it stream footage with its working eye-camera, and even make it spout one-liners. It was a cool toy, and it made this collector's edition more than worth getting.
4. Dead Space

Some people don't like horror games, but I bet even the scardiest of cats were willing to suck it up for the Dead Space remake's collector's edition. Similar to Halo 3's, what really sold people on it was the helmet you got with the purchase. The big difference, however, was that this one was wearable, and it lit up.
So, you have the option to immerse yourself while playing the game, as wearing the helmet could help make you feel like you're in Isaac Clarke's shoes. There were other goodies as well, like the standard steelbook case and exclusive physical merch. However, if we're being honest, the wearable helmet alone made the collector's edition the sought-after purchase.
5. Elden Ring

Getting Elden Ring was and still is a worthwhile purchase, given that it's arguably one of the best games ever produced by FromSoftware, but the collectors' editions really helped sell it to people. Regardless of which you got, the standard or premium edition, you were getting something good.
Exclusive art cards, a 40-page art book, the digital soundtrack, and other themed merch should have been enough, but they went a little further. The standard edition also came with a 9-inch Malenia statue, while the premium version included that along with a 1:1 replica of her helmet. Both are beautifully crafted, and they really made you look forward to finding and fighting the Blade of Miquella, even if you already know how insanely hard she is.
6. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD Projekt Red had to ensure that one of the best open-world action RPGs of all time also had one of the best collector's editions people could have possibly asked for. If the 10-inch statue of Geralt fighting a Griffin didn't sell people, then the wearable wolf school medallion and 200-page artbook likely sealed the deal.
People who got it on Xbox, much to the dismay and frustration of PC and PS4 owners, were also given exclusive goodies in the form of a physical map and two physical decks of Gwent cards. But even without those two, it's clear that The Witcher 3's collector's edition was already very good, which is why many purchased it as soon as they were able to.
These collector's editions are what I think are the best, but there's a good chance that future ones could top them. Still, if you can get your hands on them today from a reseller or another source, consider getting them, as you won't regret it.
