The Xbox layoffs have been brutal, hitting multiple studios and canceling a number of projects fans had hoped for. Everyone’s already talked about the wasted potential of Perfect Dark, as it already had a gameplay showcase last year. As if that wasn’t tragic enough, ZeniMax Online Studios was also working on a brand-new MMORPG called Project Blackbird.

Very little is known about this canceled project, but True Achievements was able to get the scoop on what this game would have been like. We do know that it would have come from the same studio that made the ongoing Elder Scrolls Online, so the potential for something great was there. Thus far, we know that this was going to be a sci-fi project with a meaty civil war to play through.

Project Blackbird would have had players choose whether they sided with a region on different sides of the planet. One side would burn like an endless sun, while the other would be frozen in ice. There would also be a huge open world to explore, with the usual amount of side quests to partake in, like in other MMORPGs.

We’ll never know what this MMO would have been like, but it’s a shame that the game got canned. You can never have too many games of this genre, and having the same team from Elder Scrolls Online ensures quality. Granted, there’s plenty of sci-fi games readily available, like Starfield, but this is something that could have made Xbox stand out.

Only time will tell if we ever see what Project Blackbird would have been like. A cool sci-fi MMORPG would have been worth talking about. Instead, we got all of those layoffs and now we can only wonder about what could have been.
