  • Key Update: Electronic Arts has shut down BioWare and cancelled the next Mass Effect game, but Amazon's live-action Mass Effect TV series remains in active development.

  • Quick Answer: While EA closed BioWare and cancelled Mass Effect 5, Amazon's Mass Effect TV series remains in development, leading to speculation that Amazon could buy the IP.

BioWare, the home of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Anthem, and more, officially shut its doors, leaving many to wonder what will happen to its IPs.

It was recently announced that BioWare will be shutting down amid mass layoffs at Electronic Arts. Within the 400 people let go by Electronic Arts, roughly 50 of these roles were at BioWare. Alongside the announcement of the studio's closure was the news that development on the new Mass Effect project was ending.

However, it doesn't seem to be the end of Mass Effect, with the television series seemingly still in development. This begs the question: is Amazon buying the Mass Effect IP?

Will Mass Effect's IP Shift to Amazon?

The live-action Mass Effect television series was officially announced by Amazon MGM Studios in November 2024. In August 2025, Doug Jung was reportedly hired as showrunner, with Daniel Casey writing the series. BioWare's Mass Effect boss Mike Gamble was also listed as part of the production team.

Following the closure of BioWare, many are wondering if this meant the end for the show too. However, that doesn't seem to be the case. According to IGN, sources inside Prime Video have confirmed that the series is still in development and all the creatives attached to the show remain on board.

With BioWare's IPs up in the air, this has caused some to speculate that Amazon may purchase the Mass Effect IP to continue working on the show. However, this has yet to be confirmed. We reached out to EA for comments and, as of this writing, have yet to hear back.

If they do buy the IP, that could open the possibility of a new Mass Effect game. Amazon has its own video game division, Amazon Game Studios. They've worked on several games, such as the open-world MMORPG New World and the upcoming Tomb Raider titles. It wouldn't be a stretch to say they could end up developing a new Mass Effect project if they secure the IP.

Everything seems to be hush-hush for now, but we'll update when we get more information.
