The future of Mass Effect feels uncertain right now, as news on the upcoming entry remains slim. At least we know the franchise is still alive, and a TV adaptation is officially in the works at Amazon Prime.
That’s exciting news, but it also raises a big question: what can we realistically expect from this adaptation of one of the greatest science-fiction stories of all time? Let’s dive in.
Mass Effect Amazon TV Show Could Take Place During the “First Contact War”
The biggest hook for both longtime fans and newcomers would be expanding Mass Effect’s deep sci-fi lore before Commander Shepard and the Reaper invasion ever happened.
Many fans have long wanted to see The First Contact War brought to life on screen. It’s a pivotal moment in Mass Effect history, arguably the event that started it all. Interestingly, the show’s current writer was spotted reading Mass Effect: Revelation on Instagram, a novel that takes place during that very conflict.
The First Contact War marked humanity’s (The Alliance) first encounter with alien life (Turians) after venturing into deep space using the Mass Relays. It was a brutal and misunderstood war, with no clear victor and devastating casualties on both sides, rooted in fear, miscommunication, and political tension.
Personally, I think it’s the perfect setup. It leans into complex politics and large-scale warfare, and most importantly, offers creative freedom. There are so many loose ends in that era of the timeline that even the comics and extended lore barely covered. Plus, Amazon Prime already has a proven track record with space warfare, thanks to The Expanse.

David Anderson as Protagonist
If the series does adapt the First Contact War, we could see younger versions of familiar faces from the games, especially the legendary David Edward Anderson, known to many simply as Commander Anderson.
Anderson played a key role during the First Contact War and remained central to the Mass Effect saga, mentoring Shepard throughout the trilogy. Making him the lead character would give longtime fans a compelling reason to tune in while also providing newcomers with a grounded introduction to the universe’s political and military landscape.
In the lore, Anderson was the first human to complete N7 Special Forces training, a prestigious designation in the series. Exploring his journey, especially the story behind why he was never chosen as a Spectre, could be a great way to explore personal ambition, moral complexity, and interstellar politics.
As for casting, there are plenty of promising actors rising through the industry, but personally, I’d love to see Tramell Tillman (Milchick from Severance) take the role. He has the gravitas and nuance to bring Anderson to life.
An Original Story
Another safe but promising approach would be for Amazon to craft an original story, one that doesn’t rely on the main game’s characters but instead takes place in the same timeline. For instance, the show could explore how the Reaper invasion affected other parts of the galaxy, or dive into the intricate politics between Earth, Thessia, and Palaven in the lead-up to Shepard’s rise.
It worked really well for Fallout, so doing the same here would be great.
A straight 1:1 adaptation of the games would be a mistake. It would not only feel lazy, but also miss the point of what makes Mass Effect special. The franchise is known for its ambitious, character-driven storytelling, and any TV version should aim to build on that legacy, not just repeat it.
We don’t need another Halo situation.
As long as it’s not a direct adaptation, I’m already excited to see what Amazon has planned for one of my favorite video game universes of all time.
