- Key Update: A retrospective look at how the Wii's absurd, plastic controller attachments became an iconic, irreplaceable era of gaming.

- Quick Answer: The Wii era is iconic for its goofy, often non-functional plastic controller attachments, like the Wii Wheel, proving modern gaming is missing that tactile whimsy.
If you had a Wii, then you knew how unique the controller was. Compared to the traditional controller shape, the Wii Remote was a sleek, white wand and relied on motion control and minimal buttons.
But did you know that they didn't just stop at the Remote? Nintendo and plenty of third-party publishers decided to release attachments that you could connect or attach to your Wii Remote. Before we knew it, we didn't just have a Wii Remote anymore.
We could add so many different accessories, such as a Wii Wheel and Wii Zapper. While most of them barely worked, it was the start (and maybe the end) of a goofy era. And you know what? I kind of miss it.
A Look Back at the Era of Interesting Wii Accessories
One of the most iconic accessories has to be the Wii Wheel. It was literally a hollow circle of plastic with a slot for your Wii Remote. But I - and so many other players - refused to play Mario Kart Wii without it. It made speeding through Rainbow Road feel more realistic.

But perhaps the most unique accessory I had was Babysitting Mama. The game came with a stuffed toy human baby. You had to place your Wii Remote inside the toy baby and hold it like an actual infant. It was adorable but annoying - if you even moved a little too much, the game would warn you against shaking a baby. I never shook the baby - I would just sway a lot.

Another odd one was the skateboard for Tony Hawk: Ride. It was a literal skateboard you would place in the middle of your living room. It was supposed to read your tilts and flips - and it did everything but that. For most people, it just became decor.

And there were plenty more - way more than I can even recount. Were they absurd? Absolutely. Most of them were basically just plastic cases to immerse yourself in gaming while the Wii Remote did the heavy lifting. But it added some whimsy to gaming we don't see anymore.
Today, gaming is incredibly uniform. Everyone games with the typical controllers and sleek headsets. The Wii offered a look into what it would be if publishers thought outside the box and released unique accessories with all their games.
I also can't help but miss having an item that specifically matched a game. I remember rolling out of bed on the weekend and acting like I was the top boss by "driving" with my wheel in Mario Kart. I probably looked ridiculous, but it made the game feel 10x more fun.

We can still feel the Wii legacy a bit to this day. For example, Nintendo has released a wheel accessory for racing games, as well as a Leg Strap that wraps around a player's thigh to play Switch Sports. But it's definitely not at the level of uniqueness as the Wii era. I wonder if we'll be able to return to that.
