In a year crowded with formulaic first-person shooters with copy-and-paste game design, PowerWash Simulator 2 is a breath of fresh air from the ultraviolent delights of Call of Duty and Battlefield titles.
And I think it’s the best first-person shooter this year.
Now, hear me out. Before you rally those pitchforks, it actually makes sense. PowerWash Simulator 2 is a first-person shooter. No matter how much you look away from it, you are faced with the fact that you are constantly shooting a stream of high-pressure water at any form of accumulated dirt.

There is no toxicity here. You are not pestered by angry gamers with negative K:D telling you to push Site A. In fact, you are the one removing traces of toxicity by washing away dangerous molds and disgusting grime. There’s an oddly relaxing feeling when you hear that sharp “ding!” sound after cleansing every smudge of muck with a well-aimed spray. No need for 360 no-scope headshots from 10 yards to do it. In PowerWashing Simulator 2, you just need to find the right nozzle for your Prime Vista 1500 and spray and pray like an assault rifle.
Even PowerWash Simulator 2 has an intense multiplayer mode, but it’s not a bloodbath of sorts. With its improved co-op mode, you can seamlessly play with 5 other players and compete to see who can clear a dirty section of a murky pool in the quickest time possible. When you’re not angling to race with your friends, you could always talk about anything under the sun as you wash away grime and dirt or listen to music together. I heard Spotify just dropped its annual Wrapped.

There’s more reason to compare PowerWash Simulator 2 to titles like Call of Duty and Battlefield, especially since the two military shooters have abysmally short campaigns. PowerWash Simulator 2's 36-hour single-player mode is longer than Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty Black Ops 7. Is it embarrassing for them to know that a game about cleaning dirt with places called Muckingham has a lengthier campaign? Probably. Is it hilarious? Yes.
If MetaCritic scores are your ideal benchmark for a game’s quality, PowerWash Simulator 2 currently stands at an 82 rating, whereas Black Ops 7 is at a measly 67 (!). The cleaning simulator is one point lower than Battlefield 6’s 83, but that’s still a close match.
PowerWash Simulator 2 is not a perfect game, that’s for sure, but it’s a hilariously fitting first-person shooter that rivals those of AAA giants that came out this year. Not even Borderlands 4 and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond’s score of 81 can crack PowerWash Simulator 2’s pristine record.

I know PowerWash Simulator 2 is hardly the best game this year, but the best first-person shooter? That’s something it can compete with, as long as the game industry acknowledges its presence and knows how to take a joke. Personally, PowerWash Simulator 2 is leagues better than established franchises scurrying to adapt to the increasingly unpredictable gaming market.
And it’s high time we call it a first-person shooter.
