Umamusume Pretty Derby is an interesting gacha game where you train girls to participate in "horse" races, hence the game and franchise's title. Like any other gacha, you will have to pull for characters to use in these races.
Characters in Umamusume Pretty Derby are categorized into characters and support cards. The former are the primary characters who we'll be training and participating in the races. Meanwhile, the supports are similar to support characters, weapons, or artifacts in games such as Genshin Impact. They will provide stats and other training events to help the character.
With all of that in mind, is Umamusume free-to-play (F2P) friendly? Let's take a look!
Is Umamusume: Pretty Derby Free-to-Play Friendly?
If you're mostly a casual gacha gamer, then yes, Umamusume is very F2P-friendly.
I was honestly surprised when I first started the game since there were many free Carats when I opened my mail. I just completed the tutorials and received around 7,000 Carats that I can immediately use. These can be used in the character and support banners, or "Scout," in Umamusume.
There are login events that will give you resources, including Carats enough for one pull, but these vary each time. However, from my experience with Japanese gacha games like D4DJ Groovy Mix, these free premium currencies run out pretty fast. Be sure to use them wisely and on character and support banners that you truly want to get.
If you just enjoy getting through the main story, events, and the gameplay loop of training the girls, then you will be fine without stressing too much about getting the right characters and supports. You can also easily do rerolls in Umamusume compared to other gacha games.
I'm not a huge fan of Player vs. Player (PvP) in any type of game, let alone in a gacha game. I think this will be the greatest disadvantage that free-to-play players have in Umamusume Pretty Derby. Of course, you are welcome to participate and compete, just be aware that you may not perform on the highest level.
However, it is not impossible, as there are free-to-play players who try to rank against those who spend. This will require a lot of luck, planning, and a deeper understanding of the mechanics, such as skill, track, and distance.
While Umamusume is F2P-friendly, competitive players will need to decide whether they want to spend on Paid Carats (Carrots).
