  • Quick Answer: Muting voice chat in competitive multiplayer games stops toxicity and harassment, allowing players to focus better using pings and non-verbal commands.

It's common knowledge, but I'll say it - sometimes it's hard being a woman in competitive lobbies.

If anyone knows anything about me, it's that I have an unhealthy obsession with Valorant. While my favorite way to play is by 5-stacking with my friends and voice-chatting on Discord, sometimes the itch to play is strong, and I solo queue. And each time I find a match, I need to hold my breath and hope I don't end up with toxic teammates.

Sadly, I more often than not end up with teammates who have no problem pinning the blame for a lost round on an innocent teammate. The worst is when I gain the courage to open my mic and communicate with my team, only to be immediately shut down for being a woman. I used to just accept the slew of insults for the sake of the team, but I've learned better. Sometimes, it's better to just mute your comms and finish a game.

Turning Off Voice Chat Is the Best Decision I’ve Made for My Rank and Mental Health

We've been brainwashed into thinking that keeping your comms open is a sacred duty if you want to win. But let's be real - unless you're playing with friends, 90% of comms in standard lobbies aren't providing anything useful.

Sometimes, you'll come across the person who has their mic constantly open, so we can hear everything - the heavy breathing, the brainrot, the background chatter. Oftentimes, you'll get the backseat gamer who immediately starts spouting nonsense so you can't hear anything but them, which sucks if you're the last person standing. Most people use comms as a way to spread noise pollution, and it makes hearing footsteps difficult.

If you're a woman, you get this but worse. Beyond the backseat gaming and background noise, you're often hit with misogynistic comments. I can't even tell you how many times I've been told to go back to the kitchen and make a sandwich instead of playing Valorant.

I've learned that turning off my voice chat isn't sabotaging my team - it's a way for me to think more clearly and actually focus on my match.

That doesn't mean I don't communicate at all. In fact, I think I'm quite an active communicator. Whenever I play Valorant or Marvel Rivals, I ping the location of enemies and use the chatbox to say how much damage I was able to cause before I died. I use the communication wheel to request healing or ask people to rotate. I'm able to communicate well with my teammates while making sure I don't hear anyone screaming at me.

These non-verbal comms are just as precise and clear as using my microphone. In fact, it's clearer - I spend less time with the fluff and go straight into the communication. It's a great way to talk to your teammates without having to experience toxic rants.

At the end of the day, I play games to challenge myself and unwind, not to have a meltdown. When I mute my comms, the game remains fun and bingeable. My win rate didn't plummet just because I turned off my voice chat - if anything, it got better because my focus improved and I actually started to enjoy gaming.

Muting your comms isn't throwing a match - it's protecting your peace.
