Rejoice, Zelda fans. If you were disappointed by the possibility of the Wii U The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker port potentially being scrapped due to the game's GameCube version inclusion via the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO), the company isn't discarding the idea of having both on the Switch 2.
Revealed during the April 8 Kinda Funny Games Daily show, host Tim Gettys confirmed that during the Switch 2 hands-on event he attended, he talked to Nintendo's senior vice president of product development and publishing, Nate Bihldorff.
Bihldorff confirmed that including Wind Waker as a main selling point for the debut of GameCube games with the launch of Switch 2 does not close the door on the Wii U port eventually making its way to the system. Gettys stated:
"I did ask if having the Wind Waker in NSO precludes it from the Switch 2 getting the actual Wii U port at some point. He was very quick to say: 'No. All options are on the table, obviously nothing's confirmed'"
Fans have petitioned Nintendo to bring back the Wind Waker HD since the first Switch was released in 2017. Instead, the company decided to port the more divisive Skyward Sword in 2021. Not even Twilight Princess made its way to the system.
Granted, from Nintendo's perspective, it makes sense. Skyward Sword hadn't received the HD treatment that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess received during the Wii U days, so porting that title to the latest system took priority.
For now, it's a never-say-never situation for Wind Waker fans regarding the HD port. We know you'll miss the Swift Sail to make the game less tedious, but at least you'll get to play it when the Nintendo Switch 2 launches this June 5. We Twilight Princess fans will have to keep waiting for a bit longer until the game gets, hopefully, added to NSO.
