  • Quick Answer: The article is a comprehensive wishlist outlining nine major feature overhauls and community-requested upgrades required to modernize the multiplayer experience for the next GTA Online.

GTA 5 is one of the best-selling video games of all time, selling over 165 million copies since its release in 2013. A rocky launch and missing features cast doubt on its online expansion, GTA Online. The hard work and persistence at Rockstar Games have taken the multiplayer component from an ‘almost ran’ to online juggernaut status.

Having been with GTA 5 since launch, I’ve played online on and off, watching it grow into the absolute money-making monster it still is today. While for the most part, the mode is a fun add-on to the single-player campaign and something fans begged Rockstar to do for years, there is definitely room for improvement in the next iteration.

With constant updates and content drops, there seems to be no slowing down for GTA Online anytime soon. That said, GTA 6 is just on the horizon, and eventually GTA Online will be sunset, so I sat down and thought about all the things I would like to see in GTA 6.

Merged Online

Whilst running around helping out Dr. Dre was fun for a while in GTA Online, combining the full campaign storyline with online elements is a must. PvP and PvE together are critical in an even more online-based community, and co-op for GTA campaign mode is essential.

Imagine taking on heist missions and hitting story beats with your friends controlling the character, instead of lousy AI getting stuck behind the jewelry counter for the 5th time! Combining the main story mode and the online section is definitely the best way to take the series, optional of course, as there will be those who don’t enjoy online play.

Lobby Options

Ever jump into an online session for a bit of fun, only to be targeted the entire time by one of those annoying little oppressor jet bike players? Missile after missile has ruined many a fun chill session or supply run with an endless bombardment.

This time, we need options: play with no armored vehicles, no rocket launchers, or ban those pesky jet bikes. Players need the option to create the session they want to be a part of and not have all the fun ruined by some punk in the sky.

Realistic Economy and Progression

Remember when a million bucks in GTA actually meant something? Nowadays, $2 million won’t get you very far, forcing players into an endless, mind-numbing grind or pushing them to buy Shark Cards. It completely shatters the immersion when a military-grade attack helicopter costs roughly the same as a glorified luxury sedan.

The next iteration needs a grounded, realistic economy. Payouts for street-level crimes should feel minor, while massive, high-risk heists should give you enough cash to set you up for life, or at least buy a mansion without having to repeat the same mission fifty times.

Expanded Map and Continuous Travel

Los Santos is great, but after more than a decade, we know every square inch of the map. Rumor has it we are heading back to Vice City, but why stop there? The next GTA Online needs to expand beyond a single state.

We need a map that grows over time, allowing players to buy a ticket at Vice City International Airport and fly over to Los Santos or Liberty City for an entirely different vibe. Introducing multiple cities would keep the game fresh for another decade and give our criminal empires room to truly scale up nationwide.

Reworked Police AI and Wanted System

The police in GTA 5 are practically psychic. You can execute a stealthy assassination with a suppressed sniper rifle in the middle of the empty desert, and somehow, within three seconds, two squad cars are ramming into you. It ruins the fun of being a tactical criminal.

GTA 6 needs a revamped, dynamic police system.

The police should actually have to investigate crime scenes, look for witnesses, or describe your vehicle over the radio. If you manage to swap cars in an alleyway out of sight, you should actually be able to lose them, rather than dealing with aimbot police who know your exact coordinates at all times.

Deeper Property and Business Management

Buying a nightclub or an arcade in GTA Online was a great step forward, but it quickly turned into a passive income stream where you just walk in, change the DJ, and walk out. There is so much missed potential for a true criminal underworld simulator.

We need deep, micro-management options for our businesses.

Let us recruit specific NPCs with unique stats, micromanage smuggling routes, or actively sabotage rival players' businesses in meaningful ways. Properties shouldn’t just be fancy garage spaces with a computer desk; they should feel like living, breathing hubs of a massive criminal syndicate.

Survival and Roleplay Elements

The massive explosion of GTA RP (Roleplay) servers on PC showed Rockstar exactly what a huge portion of the community actually wants: immersion. People love the mundane details of living a virtual criminal life, from refueling cars to getting a proper job as a front for their illegal deeds.

While we don't need full-blown life-sim mechanics that force us to eat every five minutes, adding optional survival or roleplay mechanics would be a massive win. Give us deeper vehicle maintenance, real, interactive restaurants, and the ability to choose custom animations or walking styles so our characters feel like actual individuals, not just carbon-copy NPCs.

Destructible Environments

For a game centered around high-octane explosions and crazy driving, the world of GTA is surprisingly rigid. It's always incredibly jarring when you head-on collide with a fence or a small tree, only for your vehicle to grind to a halt against an indestructible object.

This generation of hardware can handle better physics, and we need to see that reflected in the world. While leveling an entire skyscraper might be asking too much for an online lobby, breaking through concrete barriers, blowing holes in brick walls, or taking down telephone poles should be standard features to make police chases feel truly epic.

Cross-Progression and Balanced Cross-Play

If there is one thing that splits up gamers more than anything, it's platform exclusivity. If you move from Xbox to PC, or your friend is still on a PlayStation, trying to sync up your criminal empires shouldn't require jumping through a dozen hoops or starting from scratch.

Rockstar needs to implement flawless cross-progression from day one.

More importantly, cross-play needs to be carefully balanced. Console players shouldn't be forced into lobbies with PC modders who can instantly spawn UFOs on their heads, but we should still have the freedom to jump into a private lobby and pull off a heist with friends, no matter what plastic box they prefer to play on.
