The Third-Person Mode in Halo: Campaign Evolved Should Not Have Been a Skull

Locking Halo's third-person mode behind a hidden skull was a huge mistake that needs to be fixed.

  • Key Update: Halo: Campaign Evolved locks its headline third-person camera perspective behind the hidden "Perspective" Skull on the Pillar of Autumn mission rather than providing an on-the-fly toggle.
  • Status: Confirmed

  • Quick Answer: To play in third-person, you must retrieve the Perspective Skull from the Pillar of Autumn's bridge alcove and enable it before starting a level.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is out, and it's undoubtedly a fantastic remake. The Covenant is just as deadly as ever, and the visuals are absolutely stunning. It earns its right to be an enhanced version of the first entry in the Halo series, and fans, both new and old, should rejoice.

However, as someone who is particularly fond of the game, I have a certain issue with it. Given that it is a remake, there will obviously be some new additions, such as the inclusion of a Sprint feature that was not available in the original. But that's not what concerns me, as it's instead about something else that I believe should have been a part of the game from the get-go.

One of the more intriguing changes made for the remake is the ability to play the campaign in third-person mode. This is something that has never been done before, and is one of the defining features of Halo: Campaign Evolved. However, as mentioned earlier, it's not available from the start.

If you want to be able to play the game in third-person, you're going to have to put in some work. This is because the feature is locked as one of the game's many Skulls. So, essentially, you'll need to find it first if you want to experience the remake through a different perspective.

This is a very confusing decision the team behind the remake made, as something grand like being able to play in third-person in a game that's primarily played in first-person should not be hidden from players. The worst part is that people can completely miss it and not even realize it was a feature they can access.

If you want to find the third-person Skull in Halo: Campaign Evolved, then it's on the very first mission of the campaign. That's great, as it at least sounds like you'd be able to get it quickly. However, that isn't exactly the case.

For those playing the game for the first time and returning veterans, they'll likely be gawking at the enhanced visuals, cutscenes, and changes to the overall gameplay. Their minds won't be focusing on the Skull, but instead on the game and the mission in front of them.

Even then, there is a good chance that they can miss it completely. You can only get the Skull after the first cutscene between Captain Keyes and the Master Chief, as it will be in the Pillar of Autumn's cockpit area. The problem is that the exact spot is something most people will completely ignore or not even think about heading towards.

Once the cutscene concludes, you have to willingly enter the cockpit area, head to the front, drop down in an alcove between two pilots, and then you'll find the Skull in a corner. No normal player would even think about doing this, as their attention will be focused on fighting the Covenant threat that's tearing through the ship.

So, it's only natural that many would miss out on the Skull, thus missing out on the third-person feature. Again, this should not be the case, as it is a game-changing mode that delivers a perspective that veterans of the series could have only dreamed of.

Instead of being a Skull, it would have been much better if players could switch from first person to third person on the fly. All that was needed to be done was to replace one of the functional buttons, such as those involving the d-pad, as they're rarely used, with the ability to change perspective.

That would make it so much easier and more convenient, and players such as myself would have absolutely loved it. Even if not through any of the controller's buttons, it would have been much better if it were an option in the menu that can be accessed at any moment's notice.

Those are much more preferable than having to find a Skull on a mission somewhere. To emphasize the point of not having the third-person feature being unlocked in the form of a Skull, every time you want to switch to the new perspective, you'd need to restart the mission through the level select.

This is because you need to turn on the Skull right before starting any level of the campaign, and if you do that, you'll be locked out of first-person until you decide to switch it off. It's a hassle and an annoyance every time it needs to be done, thus taking away any value the feature may have had.

I hope that a day will come when Halo: Campaign Evolved gets updated so that players can activate third-person whenever they wish, instead of relying on it being a Skull. It is highly unlikely, but given how it can enhance the player experience, the change is still a possibility. If not, then it's a missed opportunity, perhaps one that can be rectified in the next remake.
