The Switch 2 Might Convince Me to Finally Play Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 launched as an overhyped buggy mess, but was able to turn things around and become a genuinely good single-player RPG. Despite the game being out for five years or so, this writer hasn’t really felt the urge to pick it up. I always felt that the first-person view made customizing V feel pointless, and gameplay didn’t look engaging enough.

Some things have made me reconsider my stance on not picking up the game. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was an excellent anime that made me appreciate its world, though its art style is so different from the game. Fans have also praised the Phantom Liberty expansion, which has superb writing and a cool Idris Elba role.

What’s really convincing me to play Cyberpunk 2077 is that the whole game is on a small Switch 2 cartridge. That’s a really impressive feat from CD Projekt Red, and makes me want to try this game out for the cartridge’s novelty. It’s a small thing, but the Switch 2 version might convince me to finally play this game.

Of course, several factors will prevent me from playing this version anytime soon. This writer currently doesn’t have a Switch 2, since it doesn’t look like the system is a must-have right now. While the big screen and increased power are nice, the Switch OLED’s bright screen and longer battery life are enough to keep me satisfied.

Still, even I can’t deny that seeing a game like Cyberpunk 2077 on a stronger Nintendo system is impressive. The fact that it’s on such a small cartridge is so appealing, because those wizards at CD Projekt Red fit a whole PS5-era game in such a little thing. Putting that in and seeing the impressive neon world of this classic franchise sounds really cool.

Realistically, I can already play this game on Valve’s Steam Deck. After all, it’s a pretty powerful system and would be cheaper to get there, since it’s gone on sale a few times. However, it might just feel like another powerful game in a PC handheld, while it feels like a generational milestone on Switch 2. That might sound odd since these are just game systems at the end of the day, but an M-rated open-world RPG launching on a Nintendo platform still feels surreal.

Maybe I will end up getting Cyberpunk 2077 on a different system for the sake of convenience. But I can’t deny that it’s Nintendo’s Switch 2 that made me interested in this game in the first place. That doesn’t sound right since this game has been out for years, but just hearing how it’s on a Nintendo system is crazy to me.
