The Nintendo Switch 2 comes with a lot of upgrades from the first Switch, and with that also comes an updated version of several titles from the first console.

Though these sort of updates usually come free for players who already own a game in previous console generations. it looks like there will be a price on bringing your copy of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to the Switch 2 gen.

“Upgrades, People, Upgrades!”

As @CentroLEAKS has pointed out, based on the Japanese prices of the Switch 2 edition of Breath of the Wild, it’s going to cost about $10 to upgrade an original Switch 1 copy of the game to the Switch 2 version. Here’s the post:

What’s more, the price also increases depending on the size of the game; so while Zelda may cost only $10 for the Switch 2 version, players will have to shell out as much as $20 for bigger updates that include DLC content like Mario Party Jamboree.

Though it isn’t free, some people do think that the price tag for an upgrade is already more reasonable as compared to buying a completely remade game- like The Last of Us Part I which was a ground-up remake of the original.

Sony had a previous slip-up when they launched a remastered The Last of Us edition for PS4 in 2014, just a year after its original PS3 release with no way to upgrade for a smaller fee. They would correct this with the PS5 Last of Us Part II remaster, which was $10 for those who owned the game on PS4.

One comment on the thread wrote, “Was expecting that to be far worse, 10 or 20 for an upgrade is nothing considering they could go full greed and just make us buy Switch 2 editions full price.”

The Price of Games

With the reveal of several titles for the Switch 2, it has been revealed that a standard game is now going to cost around $80 for digital releases, and $90 for physical copies.

While some people have been scoffing at the increased price tag, it does seem like this has been inevitable when it comes to the future of gaming. With the game industry at a current low point, some insiders have suggested that a $100 price tag on new games could save the industry, and GTA VI could be the starting point. Nintendo just made the slow step forward to a new status quo.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5.
