  • Quick Answer: Far Cry 7 leaks suggest a controversial 72-hour in-game rescue time limit, survival mechanics, and potential multiplayer campaign integration that compromises traditional open-world freedom.

Much like the Ghost Recon series, I was rather worried by reports of development struggles concerning the next mainline Far Cry game.

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has stated that the development process has so far been “abysmal”, with plans “changing pretty much on a monthly basis.”

This would explain why it’s been awfully quiet at Ubisoft since the release of Far Cry 6 nearly five years ago, but despite the radio silence, I’ve remained eager to learn more about the next installment, just as any long-term fan of the franchise would.

That is, until now. You see, having read through the latest Far Cry 7 leaks, I’m not surprised that its development is causing such a stir, and the gameplay details have even left me reluctantly keen for it to be delayed further so it can go back to the drawing board.

Why? I hear you ask. Let’s just say that the next game is shaping up to be a Far Cry from what I want it to be. See what I did there?

According to reputable Ubisoft dataminer Rogue I Tx, Far Cry 7 will put players in a high-stakes PvEvP environment where they will scavenge and extract in a survival loop.

The long-rumored 72-hour in-game time limit to rescue up to 6 Family Members remains in place, while weapon durability, safehouses, and wildlife such as wolves, foxes, deer, and grizzly bears are also set to feature.

Rogue I Tx added that Far Cry 7 “does have a campaign but also a PvE”, though confusion remains on whether the campaign is a separate single player experience, or tied into the PvE element.

If - and It’s a big if - Ubisoft decides to mix multiplayer elements into the campaign, then I can’t help but feel like it would be a recipe for disaster. Not to mention, I already have my doubts about the aforementioned in-game time limit that counts down as you play.

One of the best parts about the Far Cry games is their sprawling open-world design, allowing players to explore the varying environments at their own pace. Now, I get it. Whenever a kidnapping or hostage situation takes place, some sort of time limit or deadline is usually set. Looking from a developer standpoint, I can see why adding the time limit makes sense and may seem like a cool idea with the story's plot in mind.

However, by implementing a feature like this, that sense of freedom and discovery is immediately taken away from players, adding a layer of restriction and panic that no one will enjoy. There are a ton of unanswered questions that surround it, too. Does the time limit apply and reset for each rescue? What happens if you miss the deadline? Will you lose all progress and have to start a new game? How can we get the most out of the experience?

As I said, part of me gets the thinking behind it. It would be unique, and it would certainly be different. Equally, it just doesn’t sit right with me, and I’m not sure I would enjoy the game dictating how much time I have to do stuff. Let me be the judge of that; after all, I’ll probably be paying at least $70 to own the darn thing in the first place.

Adding in PvEvP for the campaign on top of the time limit would cross the line and signify a huge own goal by Ubisoft. If it wants to retain its dedicated Far Cry player base and have the community’s best interests at heart, this simply cannot happen.

This goes back to my previous point about the time limit; players just want to enjoy the weird and wonderful world of Far Cry in peace and of their own free will.

From the unforgettable villains and nerve-wracking storylines to the explosive FPS combat and dynamic open worlds, these have all made Far Cry the success it is today. Ubisoft must never forget that.

The last thing players want is to be enjoying all of those elements in the next game, only for their experience and sense of immersion to be ruined by other players. PvE or any Multiplayer aspect, for that matter, does not belong in a Far Cry campaign. A dedicated mode that doesn’t interfere with the single-player story? That’s a different matter.

Based on what’s been reported so far, I do still have some hope that the key decision-makers at Ubisoft will keep any potential PvE mode separate from the main campaign, but only time will tell.

That said, it could be quite a while before we know the exact direction of travel Ubisoft decides to take with Far Cry 7, should the development struggles continue. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. At the end of the day, the gaming industry is struggling as a whole right now, and I suppose we should be grateful if we even end up getting another Far Cry game at all.
