CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 was a perfect launch title for the Switch 2, as it shows just how powerful this hybrid console is. While it’s still lacking when compared to a PS5 or Xbox Series console, this handheld is no slouch in the power department. However, it’s not all good news with Nintendo’s new system, as the game struggles to run the Phantom Liberty DLC.
Online fans have been pretty vocal about the Switch 2 performance of Phantom Liberty, especially when compared to the main game. Although Nintendo’s handheld can handle the main campaign without much issue, it does start to chug when players start the DLC. Since this section is more graphically demanding, fans have noticed framerate drops, unwarranted pauses, and even crashes.
Digital Foundry has also detailed some of the Switch 2 issues of Phantom Liberty, which is a shame since Cyberpunk 2077 by itself runs decently. This game also has a few performance dips here and there, but it’s never anything game-breaking. Seeing the DLC struggle does make the system feel more limited, even if it’s a powerhouse compared to its predecessor.
We imagine that the folks at CD Projekt Red will keep updating the version of the game and make that DLC campaign more playable. The company has a reputation for thinking of its customers, so future patches for this port seem pretty likely. It is concerning that the game’s DLC was released in this state, but fans do have the beefy regular campaign they can enjoy before that patch comes.
Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC was always going to be more graphically intensive than the main game. There’s a reason why this expansion wasn’t released on PS4 and Xbox One, as they couldn’t handle the content. Both consoles could barely handle the base game, so we imagine not adding the DLC to those last-gen systems was a good thing.
It's unfortunate that the Switch 2's limitations were revealed this early. Then again, it's a miracle that CD Projekt Red was able to fit the whole game in a 64GB game card. We're sure Cyberpunk 2077 will get more updates and become a definitive handheld experience on Nintendo's hybrid console.
