It was back in 2021 when the remake of Knights of the Old Republic was announced. But with no update for so long, fans thought the game, like many others, had eventually been canceled.

Unlike Star Wars: Hunters though, that doesn’t seem to be the case. As it turns out, the KOTOR remake is very much alive, and a dev working on the game just gave a rather vague but positive update.

The KOTOR Remake is NOT Canceled

It was April 2024 when Saber CEO Matthew Karch said that the Knights of the Old Republic remake was “alive and well”, and in a recent interview with Game File (via VGC), Karch reiterated that KOTOR is still in development, but he couldn’t share any specific details.

Though Karch couldn’t be specific about the status of KOTOR, Saber’s CCO Tim Willits did post on social media confirming that several of the games they’ve announced over the past year—which includes Old Republic—are still in active development.

As it turns out, Saber is allowing Disney to take the lead when it comes to their Star Wars reveals, because they know exactly what’s cooking behind the scenes of the Lucasfilm brand, and they probably have the best idea when to update fans.

The Original KOTOR

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic originally came out back in 2003 and was playable for PC and the original Xbox. The story was set 4000 years before the events of the original Star Wars and had a heavy emphasis on player choices and their consequences.

The original protagonist for the first game was Revan, and players would progress through the game by choosing whether Revan would fall to the Dark Side or stick true to his Jedi path.

Besides allowing players to build their characters and grow their Force powers, the game also comes with several other characters for players to team up with, from other saber wielders to Han Solo scoundrel types.

The game is regarded by a lot of longtime fans as one of the best Star Wars games of all time, and before The Acolyte, there were a lot of calls for Lucasfilm to keep exploring the Old Republic era of the lore; too bad they canceled that series though.

It’s unclear what exactly a KOTOR remake will look like with the modern gen, but some are hopeful that the game will have an FFVII Remake-level update, with a whole new system and fighting mechanic.

That being said, there are a bunch of characters from the game that a lot of players have grown to love, and it will be up to the story writers to make sure they find a great balance of adding new things to the story while keeping to the core of the original game.

No release date has been set for the Knights of the Old Republic remake, but there are plans to make some big reveals at Star Wars Celebration 2025 this April, so fans can tune into that.
