Square Enix just randomly dropped new screenshots and a slight update on Kingdom Hearts 4’s development, and you can probably guess how we feel about it. (Spoiler: We’re excited!)

This can only mean one thing: a trailer is probably coming soon. Call it hopium or something worse, but it’s been three years since we last saw Sora waking up in what looks like a modern-day setting. Since then, Square Enix has gone completely radio silent.

The unfortunate cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link left some fans of the mobile games distraught, while others were relieved, knowing that the full focus and resources might now shift to the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts 4. Some even predicted that canceling Missing Link would be Square’s way of ramping up marketing for KH4, and that prediction seems to be coming true.

Today, Square Enix released a batch of new screenshots and revealed content we haven’t seen in three years. Sora is all grown up, and honestly, he looks like he walked out of Final Fantasy. In the screenshots, there are no more gigantic shoes or exaggerated spiky hair. We even got a glimpse of Mickey Mouse as a playable character, which is a big deal in the world of Kingdom Hearts.

A potential trailer reveal could happen during this year’s Summer Game Fest, airing on June 6. But I want to be clear here: this isn’t a leak or even a rumor, just a bit of copium on my end. Think of this as a piece I’d go back to once my prediction comes true in the next few months. For now, we wait. The best-case scenario? A new trailer with fresh Kingdom Hearts 4 info and maybe more context for the screenshots we’ve seen.

Worst case? We don’t get another trailer until The Game Awards later this year, or maybe, just maybe, Square Enix will host their own Kingdom Hearts Direct-style event, like Nintendo and Sony do with their titles. If that’s the case, I’m seated.

Waiting for a new Kingdom Hearts game hasn’t always been easy. Sometimes, the result doesn’t meet expectations (KH3, I’m looking at you, but not judging; I personally loved every minute of it).

As for Kingdom Hearts 4, there’s a real chance a trailer could drop soon. But after being a fan for over 20 years, I’ve learned to temper my expectations. Still, it’s always exciting to feel that spark again. Kingdom Hearts is back on our radar, and that alone is something to hold onto.
