Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was one of the biggest movies in the past few months, so it would make sense for SEGA to capitalize on that popularity for more Sonic releases.
Last year, we saw the announcement of the free-to-play game Sonic Rumble, and while it was expected to be released in the winter season, it looks like SEGA will take more time to cook with this one.
Sonic Rumble Delayed to Spring
According to Video Games Chronicle, it’s been confirmed that Sonic Rumble will be delayed for a few more months and will opt for a release in the spring of 2025. The game had a soft launch last year in some select countries and was expected to be available globally, but it seems SEGA wants to take just a little more time to work out the kinks on Rumble.
SEGA said in a statement:
“We would like to extend a huge thank you to our players and Sonic fans for their patience in waiting for the global launch of Sonic Rumble… The team is committed to delivering a memorable experience for Sonic fans with even more new game mechanics, new features, and more exciting content to look forward to.”
What Do Fans Know about Sonic Rumble So Far?
As mentioned, Sonic Rumble is a free-to-play game that promises to gather up to 32 players in one arena to battle for the right to collect the most rings.
The official description reads:
“On your mark, get set...PLAY! Get ready to race in the all-new Sonic Rumble! Jump into a speedy, 32-person mobile royale set in a cheery toy world created by Dr. Eggman. Play as some of your favorite characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe complete with customization to create your perfect avatar as you dive into action-packed gameplay.”
Admittedly, the game looks like another free-to-play game, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. It uses the same mechanic: 30+ players are placed in obstacle courses and must fight to the top.
If Sonic Rumble is different in any way, there will also be a side-scrolling mode that resembles the classic Sonic the Hedgehog titles.
What’s the Catch?
With the game being free-to-play, many fans are already wondering how SEGA will be earning with Sonic Rumble, and it’s been confirmed by Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka that Rumble won’t be making use of any lootbox mechanics.
Instead, the game will adapt a Season Pass structure focusing on character skins and emotes. There will also be a Ring Shop where players can take their gathered rings and use them to buy specific items for a limited time.
No specific release date has been announced for Sonic Rumble, but it’s expected to launch this Spring for iOS, mobile, and PC.
