Sonic the Hedgehog has been a surprisingly prominent figure in mobile gaming. The SEGA icon has been represented pretty well in this realm, with Sonic Dash, Sonic Rumble, and Sonic Jump still being popular. It looks like the fastest thing alive wants to try his hand at the card battler genre with Sonic Blitz.
From SEGA and Angry Birds developer Rovio, Sonic Blitz tries turning the blue hedgehog’s iconic cast of friends and enemies into battle cards. It’s not the most unique premise, but this could scratch that card-battling itch for Sonic fans. There are also some decent production values, which are expected from SEGA and Rovio.
Because the beta is currently available in the Philippines, this writer decided to try it out. So, how is Sonic Blitz?
How Does Sonic Blitz Play?
This is a mobile game where you use cards based on Sonic’s friends and enemies to reduce your opponent’s life points to zero.
Players have two lanes where they can put cards. If activated cards are in both lanes, damage to your life points is halved. Lanes with no cards or activated cards will take the full brunt of damage.
Feeling like a simplified mix of Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon TCG, players will need energy to use certain cards. Energy can be gained by ending a turn early and not attacking. The more energy you have, the more cards you can put down, resulting in more damage. Once players have enough cards, they can “dash” to deal damage.
Certain cards in Sonic Blitz also have unique abilities that can turn the tide in your favor. For example, Charmy the Bee’s attack increases with more characters in his lane. This adds a decent amount of strategy to proceedings.
Is Sonic Blitz Fun?
If you like mobile card battlers, Sonic Blitz is another one. While not entirely original, this is a functional mobile title that Sonic fans will enjoy.
Presentation-wise, there’s a lot to enjoy here. Seeing Sonic and his friends pop up to attack the opponent’s barrier, a representation of their life points, is pretty cool. The music is also upbeat and fun, which should make fans happy. While it's not Sonic X Shadow Generations, this is still a solid mobile title for SEGA fans.
